100 Years in America (Vanity)
Vanity | August 29, 2003 | Lurking Libertarian

Posted on 08/29/2003 9:54:04 AM PDT by Lurking Libertarian

According to the Ellis Island website, today is exactly 100 years to the day that my maternal grandfather landed in America. The ship's manifest described him as an "Austrian Hebrew furrier" (he was from Poland, which was then part of the Austrian Empire), and he had a princely $80 in his pocket.

Please join me in giving thanks for this great land, and in praying that it remains a beacon of freedom and opportunity.

God Bless America!

My congratulations on your celebrating your grandfather's immigration.

Isn't it amazing how this country takes the poor, downtrodden, unwanted people from other countries and their efforts, and their families efforts, support and enhance America?

Did he ever learn to speak English? As many of the people crashing our borders as we speak, could care less.

Congratulations; it is hard for us to imagine in this jet age when world travel is cheap and fast the courage it took to go to a strange land leaving your family and friends knowing that most likely you would never see them again.

Hip, Hip, Hooray! Congratulations on a great family milestone.

My parents celebrated their 50 year anniversary of coming to America in November, 2001. I am grateful to the many who came before us and built this great nation. My parents fled the communists in Czechoslovakia after WWII, and found safety and freedom in America. May she always be a beacon of freedom and a sanctuary for those in need.

..."Austrian Hebrew furrier"....

Hey! Just like Schwarzenegger!

Except for the Hebrew part, of course.

And the furrier part.

But otherwise...!

My g-g-grandfather came over from Alsace, landing in Galveston in 1869. From family history I knew he was a fastidious dresser and played the piano, I had visions of him being rich or maybe a hint of royalty, till I did more family research and couldn't find his name, nor his 2 brothers on a passenger manifest. Come to find out they were stowaways and had to work off their passage. So much for fancy dreams. Found his grave several years ago in the Bold Springs Cemetery in West, Texas, now a fond memory.
