[history]
The consensus among the Golden State's political elite is that the recall of Gov. Gray Davis is a catastrophe. It's easy to understand why the Democrats hate the recall; their man is being ousted. But conservative Republicans hate the recall, too. The national Republican Party has been surprisingly silent, fueling speculation that they'd prefer to watch Davis twist in the wind, buffeted about by a lackluster economy, record budget deficits and Draconian cuts in public services. Conservative columnist William Safire, a gleeful Davis critic, opined that Californians should behave like adults and live with their gubernatorial mistake until his natural term expires. Even Jay Leno, who knows a joke when he sees one, jibed, ``How dumb is California? People in Florida are laughing.''

The reason why most politicians on both sides fear the recall is that this could eventually happen to them.

I might think the same thing if the fortunes of millions of people weren't at stake.

I think that's a good idea. Let Davis twist slowly in the wind and take down the entire Democratic Party along with him.

POWER TO THE PEOPLE!The old 60's anarchists now ensconsed in tenured University jobs, never dreamed their chant would come back to haunt them from the GOP side of American politics!
I love it!

I don't agree that the reporter is stupid. As far as our representative form of government, you are correct that it is a republic. However, the way California laws govern recalls and initiatives, it is indeed direct DEMOCRACY. A majority (or plurality in some cases) vote directly by the people, not by their elected representatives, decides the issue - democracy defined (even if you choose to call it 'mob rule'.)

I think that's a good idea. Let Davis twist slowly in the wind and take down the entire Democratic Party along with him. I'd be all for that, but with 55 CaliCongresscritters and a de-balled Republican majority in both houses, I know damn well all the rest of us will end up paying for Kalifornia's marxist malfeasance. So please, y'all stop the hemmoraging before it becomes one helluva burden on us all.
