Aug. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Billionaire philanthropist and investor George Soros is supporting a new U.S. political group called Americans Coming Together, which aims to raise $75 million to campaign against President George W. Bush in the 2004 election, the Washington Post reported, citing Ellen Malcolm, head of EMILY's List, who'll become the group's president.

ACT is being formed by labor, environmental and women's organizations, and has commitments of more than $30 million, including $10 million from Soros, $12 million from six other philanthropists and $8 million from unions, among them the Service Employees International Union, the newspaper said.

In a statement giving his reasons for the contribution, Soros said the fate of the world depends on the U.S., and Bush is leading the country in the wrong direction, the Post reported.

ACT, led by Chief Executive Officer Steve Rosenthal, plans to concentrate its activities in 17 states: Iowa, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Washington, Wisconsin, Arizona, Arkansas, Florida, Missouri, Nevada, New Hampshire, Ohio and West Virginia; all are likely to be election battlegrounds, the paper said.

The only thing in this life about which George Soros is right.

Imagine the outrage in the press if some billionaire wished to support Bush with millions of dollars.

When Soros was given a chance to put his $$$$ against cancer
for new treatment modalities -- he declined.

Instead, his interests are political, for himself.

George Soros is supporting a new U.S. political group called Americans Coming Together

Bill Clinton heard the name of the group and couldn't wait to join.

What annoys me is that if you're a wacko leftist millionaire like Soros, you're called a "philanthropist" who gets puff pieces on "60 Minutes", but if you're a conservative millionaire such as Richard Mellon Scaife, you're either a "fat cat" or reviled as a manipulating bastard.

On the company the Soros keeps -

Jim Long, a rabble-rouser for the Veterans Speakers Alliance and Veterans For Peace, showed up to protest a fund raiser for President Bush this summer in San Francisco and extolled the virtues of comrade Castro, dictator for life in Cuba. A screaming mob of anarchists, environmentalists, Marxists, the Service Employees International Union, the Communications Workers of America and Green Party watermelons cheered him on.

Long proudly proclaimed that on every November 11th, he goes to Cuba to meet with comrades and honor communist veterans in a special commemorative ceremony.

The fate of his dream of a one world socialist "paradise" with him in control are being threatened by W. That's about it. Look at who this guy is and what he advocates (strong UN supporter, ICC supporter, not big on national sovereignty, etc.) and his comments will make more sense.

I could be very wrong (it happened once before!), but isn't all this money they're raising illegal under campaign finance reform?

I was under the impression that unions cannot donate to political campaigns unless all their members know about it, or approve or something.

I guess this isn't actually donating to a campaign for any particular candidate though. Its that nutty Anybody But Bush.

Americans Coming Together is a PAC, so this isn't a campaign contribution.

Isn't "EMILY's list" the most radical of the radical abortionist groups?

No. But it is a very lefty "women's issues" oriented high-brow money raising enterprise.
