New Film Smears U.S. Military

A film described as "a no-holds-barred account of corrupt, drug-ridden and under-employed American soldiers" is scheduled to be released in the U.S. The Drudge Report says the film, Buffalo Soldiers, is being released by Miramax, part of the Disney Company, which is "set for maximum controversy." A poster for the film shows an American soldier flashing a "V" for victory sign in front of an American flag with dollar signs instead of stars, under the slogan, "Steal All That You Can Steal."

Director Gregor Jordan, who is from Australia, says the film is supposed to be funny. But the British reviewer says "Jordan is not taking a satirical swipe at the U.S. military. He’s serious." The film is based on a book by the same name by Robert O’Connor, who teaches at an American university. The German producer, Rainer Grupe, obtained the rights to the book back in 1996, and claims that it is a "realistic" picture of the American military presence in Germany.

An Amazon.com review of the book says the main characters are "drug burn-outs" and "uniformed sociopaths." Nevertheless, it was named a Notable Book of 1993 by the New York Times. The Times may like the film, too, but we doubt that many Americans will.

Submitted FYI. It would be a shame for you to spend your hard-earned dollars at the theatre only to find yourselves looking at the latest garbage from Miramax / Disney. Please feel free to express your outrage to the purveyors of this trash.

PS ... the "Notable Book" designation by the NYT should be the first tip-off that something isn't right.

Funny, the LA Times reviewer did not like the movie because it was not political enough.

I got a great plot. It could star a a military guy selling drugs in LA and weapons in Iran to get money to fund terrorists in Central America. A real funny scene would be the President of the United States sleeping through the cabinet meeting when approval is sought. The CIA director could mysteriously die before he could testify about it. What a hoot this could be. The military guy could go on to be a star news reporter on Fox and have a huge following of fans.

It has a ring to it.

I think this is supposed to be a satire or comedy. There is a tradition of filsm that make light of the military and some of them are hilarious. Lighten up. Aren't there enough serious issues to tackle.

Oh, if only that were true. Like Charlie Rangel is satire and comedy? Yes, he is, but the constant drumbeat of the negative message works its way into the collective psyche. Do you think Charlie and friends don't know what they are doing?

Releasing this kind of "comedy" while our troops are still deployed is a statement in itself.

Hey, I post, you decide. If you want to see the film and post your own review, knock yourself out - and I mean that literally. (just fooling, consider that satire and comedy - maybe).

but the truth is is that much of the American drug traffic in those years was done by American G.I.'s- in fact so much so that when the last troops were pulled from the theatre, "Hash" as well as "Tai Sticks" disapeared from the American market all together.

I didnt grow anywhere near the time of the Vietnam War, but "Hash" as certaintly not disapeared from the market. As far as "Tai Sticks" being prevalent, more than the likely the so called "Tai Sticks" were really grown locally. In the New England about 100% of Marijuanna is grown in New Hamshipe and Vermont, and if your lucky you might get a good connection to get some from Canada. But of course everyone always brags about how they got an eighth of "Red Hair", "Afghani", "Tai Stick" when it isnt even close, its just really good bud grown locally. But "really good bud grown locally" just doesnt have the same ring to it as "TAI STICK". And once it has a name on it, it starts selling.

I'm not doubting that G.I.'s smuggled weed, but smuggling weed halfway across the world is hardly cost effective against a farmer in New Hampshire who grows stuff just as good and puts the same fancy name on it.
