I think the Church should be more concerned about violence in the womb rather than worrying about law abiding citizens owning guns and protecting themselves against intruders.  I truly feel sorry for her over the loss of her son; however, he is dead because of his disease and by the fact that it was HE who pulled the trigger.  Who knows what was wrong with him: alcohol, drugs, Prozac, etc. it could have been anything. And why penalize millions because a few do these horrendous things.  Why didn't she have her son committed?  So many unanswered questions which should have been addressed while he was alive.  NJ residents shouldn't have their rights taken away because of the tragic loss of her son. And the Church shouldn't facilitate the Hysterical 90,000 mom march.

Andrea Yates exhibited many symptoms before she MURDERED her FIVE children in the bathtub where she did not receive the death penalty and will be released in only 40 yrs.  Are we now going to license those who sell bath tubs and water, are we going to register bath tubs and water with the sate and federal government, shall we send all Americans for safety training for those who use bath tubs and water?  I think not.  Let's take care of the mentally ill people before the big problems and tragedies start.

Ukrainian immigrant Nikolay Soltys, killed his wife, kids, aunt and uncle and cousins with a KNIFE!!! Are we now going.....

She said gun control is an important step toward preventing suicide.

She's correct. No one EVER commits suicide by hanging themselves, overdosing on drugs, jumping off of a building, slitting the wrists, etc. I hate that her brother committed suicide, but she needs to quit being such a ditz.

I'm sorry for that mother's grief, it is clouding any rational judgement that she might have. Gun control laws will do absolutely nothing to prevent suicide.

Ilicit drugs, heroin, PCP, ect...are illegal....yet we have so many die of overdose. Getting that person professional help will be the only hope of preventing suicide, not taking a gun away from him.

'Round these parts, when the priest gives a sermon about evil guns, the good ole boys toss a handful of spent brass in the plate instead of cash.

I see this is headlined West Milford. I bet there are alot more folks packing heat in West Milford these days not because of crime but because of hungry black bears.

I hate to be cruel but if my kid committed suicide, I think I be a little less worried about guns and a little more concerned about what I could have done as a parent to make sure my kid never looked to snuffing themselves out as a solution to their problems.

Unfortunately, it's not too easy to get people committed for help with mental disease--which, by the way, is the reason for the "homeless" problem.

Back in the mid-70's (??) some brain-dead Dimowit (my guess) proposed and passed legislation which made it virtually impossible to have someone 'involuntarily committed' to a mental institution.

In effect, if they don't wanna go get help, there's not a damn thing you can do about it UNLESS you can prove beyond reasonable doubt that they are an immediate grave danger to themselves or others.

I think the idea that "gun control" will prevent suicide is ludicrous on its face. The "million moms" are deluded babes with either 1) an agenda like Hillary's; or 2) a serious mental deficiency.

Further, the church's pastor ought to be questioned about the utilization of resources for this "event."

But don't pick on the mom in question for not committing her son. Likely that she just could not do it, under the law.

She can't see the forest for the trees. Her brother should have been in a mental hospital but he obviously didn't fit liberal criteria for commitment. Depression killed him no matter what method he chose to end his life.

Good work as usual, Coleus. Here's my letter to Bishop Rodimer, sent by email:

"Your Excellency:

I understand that Our Lady Queen of Peace in Hewitt has invited someone from the so-called “Million Mom March” to speak in favor of gun control. Since gun control is neither wise nor mandated by any Catholic doctrine, I respectfully submit that it is improper for any Catholic parish to sponsor speakers from the Million Mom March.

The Million Mom March (the "MMM") is a political group advocating principles that are controversial at best and dangerous at worst. By focusing their wrath on inanimate and socially useful objects, namely guns, as opposed to focusing on criminals and their free choice to sin, the MMM has everything precisely backwards. MMM would disarm honest citizens, leaving the weakest and most vulnerable members of society without the means for self-defense. Women are particularly vulnerable to MMM's policies, given their smaller size and lesser strength in relation to most men.

Moreover, MMM's beliefs are not compelled by Catholic theology. The Catholic Church has always recognized an individual's right to self-defense. In 1994, the Vatican's Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace stated: "In a world marked by evil and sin, the right of legitimate self-defense by armed means exists." The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "Legitimate defense can be not only a right but a grave duty for someone responsible for another's life, the common good of the family or the state." (CCC at 2265.) Finally, the Church honors Saint Gabriel Possenti, renowned for defending a village and his monastery from Garibaldi's mercenaries with his astonishing marksmanship.

The Bible expressly supports the right of self-defense. Jesus does not rebuke the Apostles for carrying swords on their missions (Luke 22: 36-38). When Our Lord admonishes Peter for defending Him with his sword in Gethsemene, He does not condemn the instrument used by Peter, but the effort to frustrate God's will. (John 18:10; Luke 22: 49-51.) Examples of God's approval of self-defense in the Old Testament are too numerous to catalogue. (See, e.g., Exodus 22:2.)

Nor is there any factual basis for MMM's claims of the "dangers" of gun ownership. As documented by Professor John Lott of Yale, guns are used by Americans over 2 million times per year for self-defense. The Centers for Disease Control show that more children under age 15 die accidentally from drowning in plastic 5-gallon water buckets (40) or in bathtubs (80) than from accidental discharge of firearms (21). Yet there is no hysteria over either buckets or bathtubs. Socially useful objects, from automobiles to vitamins, sometimes injure people. We don't ban them, we don't subject them to expensive "safeguards" that render them socially useless, we don't let the government take steps to confiscate them, and we don't demonize those who disagree with us about the objects. The Million Mom March does all of the above in their hysteria over guns.

Gun ownership is a revered right of Americans, enshrined in the Second Amendment. Good Catholics can, and do, disagree with this controversial group's views.

Your Excellency, I respectfully urge you to consider taking steps to prevent Our Lady Queen of Peace from sponsoring, promoting, and otherwise getting itself entangled in this political issue. The invitation to the Million Mom March should be withdrawn.

Sincerely, [D-BACK]"

"Joyce Sooy of Emerson was among those taking part in the anti-gun gathering. She said gun control has been an important issue to her ever since her adult son, Eric, killed himself with his brother-in-law's gun while suffering from depression 10 years ago. She said gun control is an important step toward preventing suicide."

If there in any justice in this world, this woman will one day come to the conclusion that the death of her son was her fault. And that her efforts to deprive law abiding Americans the right to protect themselves and their loved ones, only resulted in the deaths of many others.

I hope that it is on her deathbed that she comes to the realization that she was a purveyor of death. Not only of her son, but that of innocent strangers. I wish that her last moments on earth are a realization of all that she is denying now, and of the tragedies created by her, as a result of that denial. That would be justice.
