[history]
While American cars, computers, life-saving medical treatments and even cleaning products continue to advance each year, our public education system remains at a virtual standstill.
In many inner-city neighborhoods, the situation seems hopeless, not only to families that live there, but also to their more-fortunate neighbors, whose taxes have financed the education establishment's costly wish list for the past three decades with little or nothing to show for it. A generation already has been lost; we can not afford to leave another behind. It is clearly time for change.

And here's the main reason why. Teacher's union members at a
recent gather applaud the speaker, but just as well should be clapping
for their job well done, defining our nation downwards.
Let's hear it for children who can't read and teachers who don't
want there to be tests that will indicate why.
Way to go folks... clap away.

our public education system remains at a virtual standstill.
From what I observe, it's going downhill rapidly, not standing still. Teachers are not teaching the fundamentals. Kids are not passing tests. Our US ratings keep dropping on a world scale. We keep throwing more money and more money yet our kids aren't learning. If not the teachers and curriculum, what is the problem?

Good post. Was in a blood-boiling argument the day before yesterday on this topic. My question was, "Why in the land of the free and the home of the brave are we afraid to even entertain the idea of educational choice for parents?" The person I was talking with said "We can't afford to experiment on our children." *sigh*
