GOREE ISLAND, Senegal, July 8 -- President Bush, on the first leg of his five-day African tour, said today that the United States would participate in restoring peace to the violence-torn West African nation of Liberia. Just two hours after arriving on the continent, the president said, "We'll participate in the process" of maintaining a ceasefire. He did not promise to send troops to the country, but his remarks were the closest he has come to committing the American military. "We're in the process of determining what is necessary to maintain the ceasefire and to allow for a peaceful transfer of power," the president said after a meeting with a group of West African leaders here.

I can't help you in that area. HOWEVER, I just turned on CNN and saw THOUSANDS of Liberians waving US flags and cheering Americans and praising Dubya Bush.

Don't let the liberals hear this!! That's like kryptonite! Next we'll hear that this is part of a scheme by Cheney and Bechtel to re-introduce slavery in the US!!
It's gotta be a conspiracy. haha
I can't wait to see how the networks portray the flag-waving Liberians...They treasure our flag more than our own liberals.

I though Bush opposed "peace-keeping" missions? Or at least he used to.

Yes. When you see people like that, and still say OH WE HAVE NO US INTERESTS or THIRD WORLD SCUM, then you have no heart. Frankly I was completely sold on turning Saddamy into a sausage when I saw people like that. We're the world's only superpower and we're successful because the US has been generous to others, esp. our enemies.

The happy people is just icing. Every regime on earth that despises liberty is a breeding ground for anti-Americanism and terrorism. That makes it a national interest.

The happy people is just icing. Every regime on earth that despises liberty is a breeding ground for anti-Americanism and terrorism. That makes it a national interest. The world seems to have two camps - appreciative people that are under or have just escaped despotic regimes where the US has no influence - and snot-nosed pampered scumbags who we shower with love and attention - and who then hate us. We've got to figure out how to save the world while maintaining respect.
My Dad - an old hand from the old crew at Langley - used to tell me that the Soviets were smart...when the people complained...they made everything worse...then they brought things back to where they were - and the sheeple shut up.
Translated to our methods and ethics..we need to always keep one foot out the door...ready to bolt when the unappreciate POS's get a tad too demanding. Come to think of it...that works in a LOT of contexts..both foreign and domestic.....

OK, if we're not going to be keeping the peace -- in other words keeping these folks from slaughtering each other the way they've been doing -- then what exactly would we be doing? Playing backgammon? Sowing their crops for them? Building schools and hospitals? Mowing their lawns?

The article referred to "restoring the peace" there. That can mean many different things.
