LOS ANGELES - Activists seeking to oust Democratic Gov. Gray Davis said Thursday they have turned in enough signatures for a recall election.

Ted Costa, coordinator of the Republican-led signature drive, said proponents turned in just over 1 million signatures by Thursday morning. Valid signatures from 897,158 registered voters are needed for the recall to make the ballot.

Meanwhile, an anti-recall group held a news conference in Los Angeles to display some of 1.1 million signatures they say they've collected on nonbinding petitions opposing the recall.

Gathered, by the way, by paid personnel who would entice people to "save our teachers from layoffs," or similar lies. The tales of encounters with these creeps are legion. Some of them were even circulating both petitions.

ANy attempts to derail this are going to have to be more subtle than usual. The totals are verified by the individual county registrars, who will report them to the media (and that includes bloggers, radio hosts, and Freepers these days, so it's harder to pull a fast one). Any shenanigans will be obvious and we'll have a Florida-type showdown. The speed with which this recall has qualified has Democrats already nervous that the voters are about to revolt, so they're going to be wary of appearing too obstructive. We'll force this issue whether they want it or not.

There was a previous attempt to do this when Davis drove Prop 187 into the courts and into the ground. I believe the John Birch Society had a big involvement in it and it failed to secure enough signatures. They still have a web-site... something like "American Patrol," or something like that. They also put up some billboards during their efforts.

All this during the "Deer in the headlights" Davis "analysis paralysis" mal-administration's first term!

I signed up prior to learning it was primarily organized by the JBS. I've always wondered how things would be different, had it made the ballot then.

Schwarzenegger's viewpoints on a lot of issues are a blank slate. I want to know a great deal more about him before supporting his election. So far, I'd go with McClintock if I had my druthers.

I don't know much about Ca. inner workings, but I saw Arnold on TV saying he wants more money for public school programs. Like before and after school programs.
He may win as a Republican, but I'd be a little weery. I'd think he was a left leaning RINO by the way he talked. Not one word about saving the taxpayers anything.
