COMMENTARY

'Mexifornia' Is a Tragedy in the Making By Victor Davis Hanson

Victor Davis Hanson, a fellow at the Hoover Institute and a classics professor at Cal State Fresno, is author of "Mexifornia. A State of Becoming" (Encounter, 2003).

June 29, 2003

My hometown of Selma — like most other communities in rural Central California — used to be a stable municipality. Immigrants from Europe, Japan, China, Armenia, the Punjab and Mexico flocked here to farm and prospered from their hard work, acumen and the natural bounty of the San Joaquin Valley. They came in one-time waves, under legal auspices and, within one or two generations, emerged as assimilated English-speaking citizens.

By 1970, Selma was a rich, multiracial society bound together by a cohesive and common culture.

That dream is now slipping away. Here in Central California, we have de facto apartheid towns made up almost exclusively of Mexican immigrants. Many are illegal residents who do not speak English and cannot and do not participate in the civic life of the state — voting, community service organizations and jury duty.

I will not register with the LA Time or the Washington Post.

If people have interesting things to say and would like them to be read, I'd advise them to find decent paper to print them in.

Excellent article, the second I have seen by Hanson on this subject. I believe he is writing a book on it, and it will probably be very effective in putting the multiculturalists to shame, because he really knows what he is talking about and genuinely sympathizes with the plight of illegal immigrants.

I'm not sure why he chose "A State of Becoming" as a title.

He may have been thinking we should carefully choose what we are going to become. In truth I feel this is more a case of "A State Disembled".

Anyone visiting the State in 1975 would not recognize it if they came back today.

It was a clean state with mostly middle income workers and plenty of revenues. Homes were kept up and there existed very few slums.

Today the state is filthy. Communities are decaying across the length and breadth of the state. Homes are not kept up. There exists one decaying slum across the whole southland.

Those who live in areas outside the state of California haven't seen the destruction, the decaying roads, the overburdened schools, the hospitals whose services have been halved.

Of course this isn't completely universal, but there are vast areas of the state where things have just fallen apart.

I have always thought of California as a land of opportunity, one of the best examples of what our nation claimed to be. Today the state is good example of what sloth, mismanagement and complacence will do to your nation.

Support this at your own risk folks. As California goes, so goes Arizona, Nevada and Oregon. As Arizona, Nevada and Oregon go, so goes New Mexico, Utah and Washington state.

Each new area spreads this disease closer to your doorstep. You either face it now and demand our presiden do his duty as stated in Article Four Section Four of our US Constitution, or you'll be next.

As someone who grew up in Southern Calif, and moved away at age 18, I'm always saddened by the changes I see on return visits. The place is just fading away.

And no one will do a thing about it because? BING no one wants to offend the Hispanic vote.

politicans now realize that their re-election chances are far better if they tick a lot of people off a little bit than tick off a small group of people alot.

Our coutry can now be held hostage by small groups with narrow interests.

This is the beginning of the end.

The really infuriating thing about all this, is that most Hispanics think we're nuts to allow the flood of humans across our borders and the taxing of our system to the breaking point. Ending this nonsense would make perfect sense to them. And there you have it. The politicians who pretend to understand the Hispanic thoughts the most, are the ones more out of step than anyone else.

Good post DO. As an Arizonian, I can say the fact that Janet Napalitano won the govenor's seat here in once conservative Arizona is a very good indicator of where this state is headed.
