Prayer Request for my Father
Sharkhawk

Posted on 06/28/2003 8:10:07 PM PDT by sharkhawk

Please a quick prayer for my father who died today from bilarial duct cancer at the age of 69. Although not unexpected, it came quicker than expected.
My father was a staunch conservative who was deported from Eastern Poland to a Soviet concentration camp in the early stages of World War II at the age of 5.
When the Soviets became our "allies", him and other war orphans were allowed to travel through the Soviet Union, through Iran, where the Shah's father expedited their travel to Polish orphanages in Africa, where he spent the next 7 years. He then emigrated to England, where his mother was found.
At the age of 22, he was allowed to emigrate to America, where he came without a pot to piss in. After 3 months he was drafted into the Army, graduated basic and was asked who want to be a paratrooper for an extra $$$ a month. He joined the 101st, and stayed enlisted for two more years.
After he was honorably discharged he became a citizen and a machinist and worked hard for 35 years, having two kids and buying a nice house in the Chicago suburbs, becoming what we consider a wealthy man, both in spirit and material things.
He was a great conservative and staunch anti-communist, even though a union man. He reminded me a little of the father in the Toby Keith song, always flying the flag and instilling in me and my sister a love for his adopted country (I use that term with caution, as he always called himself an American, Not a Polish-American or a European-American, although he was also proud of his Polish heritage) that I often saw sadly lacking in people who didn't understand the great opportunities this country offered. He loved to travel and finally saw his boyhood town again when the Pope went to the Ukraine a few years ago, and my mother him and friends went on a pilgramage.
He was a strong man who was healthy untill last August, when the spot was discovered, too late to operate, he never complained through 9 months of exhausting Chemo, although his weight dropped from 205 pounds, down to 150 and he lost his trademark gray hair he had since the age of 30.
Yesterday he was told that there were no more effective chemo's for his type of cancer, and I think his body just gave out. He often told us he never wanted to be the person who needed diapers, or could not take care of himself, and God answered his prayers. He told my Mom he wanted to see his sister, me and my sister, while we were there he told us to call the priest, he wanted last rites, I think he knew even though the Doctor said he thought it might be 6 months or more. The priest came, administered the rites. 30 minutes later, he started puking up dead blood, we called the ambulance and he died in the hospital less than 1 hour later. I apologize for the long post, it was just something I needed to get off my chest.

Your post brought tears to my eyes. What a wonderful American your father was. He appreciated what he had found here, and sadly that is becoming rare even for natural born citizens. My own late Father flew the flag each day. He was also a WW2 vet, and I think they knew what a privilege it was to live here in a way that the rest of us didn't. How fortunate we are to have had fathers like that. Prayers for you and your family for your loss, but he will live on in you.

It is equally sorrowful and terrifying that at this time in our history when we most need men like him, we are losing more and more of them every day.

God Bless,

Chuck

Prayers and condolences to you and your family. Lost my Father to cancer in 1995, a WWII vet, served in Italy as a Tech. Sgt. in a B-24 bomber group. Also lost my brother in-in-law 3 months ago to cancer, a Vietnam Vet served in the "Big Red One"(1st infantry div.) and had just retired after 37 years at Chrysler. Very proud of both and all that have served and sacrificed so much for our freedoms we enjoy today.

Prayers lifted for your dad, you, and your family. I salute his service in the 101st. God bless and keep him close.

My Dad is going through something similar. We will be losing him soon. I spent the day with him. He starts the last round of chemo next week. It's tough.
