NEW SARS CASE IN CHINA

China has reported a new case of SARS just a day after the World Health Organisation declared the country free of the virus.

Health officials said the country remained on high alert for the flu-like virus after the new case in the southern Guangdong province.

The new case had been previously suspected and was later confirmed as being Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.

One death from a previously confirmed case was also recorded in Beijing, the health ministry said.

WHO spokesman Bob Dietz said it did not affect the UN health agency's decision to declare China SARS-free.

"We are concerned but our concern would be greater if this was a new emerging case and not a case that has developed from an already identified suspected case," he said.

Vice Premier Wu Yi promised China "will spare no effort to prevent the return of SARS."

Beijing's government and businesses celebrated China's new Sars-free status, billing it as a victory for the nation.

They also kick-started a campaign to lure back visitors and investment.

Beijing is the city hardest hit by SARS that first surfaced in Guangdong in November and spread around the world.

WHO has behaved like China's lapdog throughout this crisis.

IMHO, Sars will return a thousandfold next fall when the weather cools and the flu season starts.

One new SARS case? I would be collapsing in hysterics if this were not so serious and the lies so blatant.

Do you know if Cangene a publically traded co. I remember AVI Pharma sent an Antisense drug to the NIH for testing, but nothing must have come of that because I never heard any follow up.

SARS: Preparing for Round Two If it returns, drug and vaccine makers hope to be ready

World health officials declare that the SARS epidemic has been stopped dead in its tracks. But in industry and government research labs, the work is just beginning. Scientists are rushing to develop diagnostic tests, drugs, and vaccines against the virus that has already killed more than 800 people. The hope is that these new weapons won't ever be needed. But the realistic expectation is that SARS is far from being beaten. "I think we're in a race not only to fight the ongoing disease, but also to be ready when it comes back -- which it will," warns Dr. Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy & Infectious Diseases. "This is not going away anytime soon."
