Republicans have come a long way from the mid-1990s, when then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich predicted Medicare's bureaucracy would "wither on the vine" and Senate Majority Leader Bob Dole said he was proud to have voted against creating the program.

Now most Republicans in both the House and Senate are backing a new entitlement to prescription drugs as part of a $400 billion, 10-year overhaul of Medicare.

Just what we need in a time when we have a big budget deficit: a new entitlement prescription drug benefit that puts Bill Gates on the same footing as Granny Jane. Does that make sense or what? And these Republicans call themselves conservatives!

Pretty sad. Republicans and Democrats, now walking hand-in-hand over the socialist cliff. Incrementalism my rear.

I just love this smaller-government Republican Party. Yeah, they want to roll it back. Sure.

No wonder Libertarians don't vote for either of the two Big Stupid Government parties.

Jeff Flake has joined Ron Paul in being the only Republicans to consistently vote against unconstitutional socialism. Flake is a member of Paul's Liberty Committee and, scanning House roll calls, their voting record is nearly identical. It wouldn't surprise me if Paul has taken Mr. Flake under his wing.

I think they stopped making that claim. It's hard to make that claim when they are going all along with all the huge socialist programs and pork barrel spending. What a great idea. Make today's working people, many of whom cannot afford their own prescription medication, buy prescription medication for somebody else's elderly parents, with no regard as to whether or not the elderly in question can afford to buy their own prescriptions.

It's almost insulting how flagrantly the Repubs just keep ignoring their base.

The message from them appears to be one of the following: (1) they feel like they can take our votes for granted, or (2) they don't really think they need our votes.
