SARAA Alert Issued For Missing Boy
6/11/2003 5:57:30 PM
(KSDK) -- A St. Louis Area Regional Abduction Alert or SARAA continues Wednesday afternoon in the search for a child who was sleeping inside an SUV this morning when it was stolen. Police say they've found the vehicle, but not the child.
Christian Ferguson. He is 9 years old.
Police say Christian Ferguson, 9, was apparently asleep in the maroon 1999 Ford Expedition when it was stolen from the 6100 block of Page, in St. Louis, at about 6:10 this morning. Police say an adult with Christian, left the keys of the SUV in the ignition and was standing just feet away talking on the telephone when it was stolen.
Police found the SUV in a residential area of Ferguson, in North St. Louis County. Police immediately began canvassing the area, going door to door, and searching along two sets of railroad tracks that run through this area of Ferguson near Dade Street.
Search Description Christian is "severely disabled."
He is a black male.
Short cropped Afro style hair.
Medium complexion.
Wearing a Pampers brand diaper.
Wrapped in a blue blanket, possibly with red trim.
Born September 9, 1993.
Meanwhile family and friends are congregating at the home of Christian Fergusons grandmother, Sandra Wilson, praying for the return of this child who they say has developmental disability problems.
Family members tell NewsChannel 5 that Christian may have Eura-Cycle Disorder, which prevents his body from digesting protein. Family members say if Christian doesnt get a special medicine that he eats, the disease can be fatal within 24 hours.
NewsChannel 5 has learned that Christians mother and father were in court last week involved in custody resolutions. Christians step father and mother are being interviewed by police for any information that could lead to the discovery Christians wherabouts.
If you have any information please call the police at (314) 444-5504 or (314) 444-5327.

6100 block of Page, in St. Louis
One bad neighborhood (Wellston) - one of the hoods in STL - 6100 block is Skinker and Page - probably drug-related kidnapping since the kid is still missing but they found the SUV.

BUMP for Christian
I just posted the same alert this morning because I didn't look down far enough with my initial search.

I doubt if this is gang or drug related. Sounds like just another one of those mother/father/stepfather/grandmother dysfunctional family labyrinths to me.

Interesting update on the situation. Excerpted from the Post-Dispatch article by Bill Bryan: (snip)
Publicly, officers called a St. Louis Area Regional Abduction Alert, the St. Louis region's equivalent of an Amber Alert. And they repeated the details they were told about a carjacker who drove away with Christian Ferguson in his father's SUV.
Privately, detectives questioned family members, too, and said they were considering all possibilities. (snip)
The father, Dawan Ferguson, 30, of Pine Lawn, called police about 6 a.m. Wednesday to say someone had driven off in his maroon 1999 Ford Expedition after he got out to place a call at a pay phone at Skinker and Page boulevards in St. Louis.
He said Christian, wearing a diaper and wrapped in a red and blue blanket, was still inside.
There was no sign of the child when police recovered the SUV about two hours later where Ronbar Lane dead-ends at railroad tracks in the city of Ferguson, about 5 miles away. Officers searched with dogs but found no sign of the boy.
Christian is described as a light-complexioned African-American with a short Afro haircut. He is about 4 feet tall and weighs about 75 pounds.(snip)
A nurse who had managed Christian's needs for about two years told a reporter that he would have been unable to let himself out of the vehicle or to communicate. She said he can walk, but very unsteadily.
The child suffers from a rare disorder that prevents him from digesting protein, and requires continuing medication and feeding through a tube in his abdomen. His former nurse said he was deeply impaired physically and mentally, and she warned that feeding him meat could put him into a fatal coma.
A source close to the case described the condition as argininosuccinate synthetase deficiency. He said the boy was in a "very brittle medical condition" and added, "If they don't find him within 24 to 26 hours, he won't be alive." (snip)
Ferguson told officers he was driving Christian to a hospital for treatment when he stopped at a pay phone to call a doctor. Investigators said they did not understand why he would do that when he had a cell phone with him.
He left police headquarters about noon, after asking for a lawyer. Police sources said he had refused to take a polygraph test.
Ferguson could not be reached for comment.
Police said a woman who lives with Ferguson told them he had left the house with the boy about 4 a.m. Detectives said Ferguson did not account for the period from then until 6 a.m.
Theda Thomas, the boy's mother, said she was frantic to find her son: "He needs his medication, and he needs his food - if he doesn't get it, he's going to die." She called him "a loving and great child." (snip)
She said Christian suffered a seizure the day after he was born and went into a coma. Doctors diagnosed his condition and were able to give him a relatively normal first few years. With successive seizures, his condition worsened.
In 2001, he was in a coma for several weeks and suffered serious brain trauma, losing his ability to speak, she said. (snip)
Judge Thomas Frawley then ordered Thomas to keep away from the children except for specific visiting times. Stephen Pollihan, the acting St. Louis police chief while Joe Mokwa is out of town, said police were moving as swiftly as possible since "time is of the essence." Pollihan acknowledged a delay in issuing a public appeal for help, at 10:30 a.m.

Call me cynical, but it sounds like pop may have gotten tired of feeding and caring for the boy. I hope I'm wrong and if I am, apologies will be forthcoming.

I read this story on some St. Louis websites (newspaper Post-Dispatch and TV, KSDK), and it looks like the father's story is not considered believeable by police. He's not cooperating, they say.

Police report progress in search for missing boy
06/13/2003
Missing boy's parents have been feuding in court. Click here for full story
St. Louis (AP) -- Searchers continue to look today for the severely disabled child who has been missing without his needed medicine since Wednesday.
(KMOV)
Christian Ferguson
St. Louis police Captain Harry Hegger said detectives are making headway in the investigation into 9-year-old Christian Ferguson's disappearance. He did not elaborate.
The boy's mother and her family continue public pleas for help.
The boy's father, Dawan Ferguson, told police he left the boy in his S-U-V to make a call from a pay phone. The car was recovered later Wednesday without the child in it.
Since then, Ferguson has remained silent publicly.
His lawyer, John Rogers, says Ferguson is grieving in private.

Nothing online but this story from earlier today:
Father of missing boy gives saliva sample
Dawan Ferguson, father of a severely disabled 9-year-old boy missing since Wednesday, provided a saliva sample Monday to St. Louis police but refused to answer questions, officials said.
If authorities find a body, they could use the sample to determine whether it is Christian Ferguson, who lives with his father in Pine Lawn.
By Monday night, there was still no sign of the boy. His family has said he could not live much beyond 24 hours without medication for a rare disorder that inhibits his processing of protein. Christian cannot communicate or take care of himself.
Dawan Ferguson, 30, told police someone drove off in his SUV when he stopped to make a call at a pay phone in St. Louis about 6 a.m. Wednesday. The vehicle was recovered empty in the city of Ferguson about two hours later.
Ferguson talked to police Wednesday morning but eventually requested a lawyer and declined to say more, officers said. Post-Dispatch
