[history]
The .zip compression format has known remarkable stability and compatibility for many years, but that may soon change. PKWare and WinZip, makers of competing compression and encryption products, are fighting over the .zip standard--which means that .zip archive files created by one program may not be accessible by the other.

I use winrar. It unpacks them all. And also will compress stuff into a single file, known as a RAR archive. Winrar is what you use at Kazaa as far as I can tell.

this wouldn't be a problem if Phil was still alive for two reasons IMO: 1) this is similar to the whole problem hat first originated between PK & SEA that led to the introduction of .zip formats & the death of .arc files. 2) PKWare would have adequate resources and interest in enhancing the product, something that's largely given way to WinZip over the past years (even preceeding Katz' passing).

PK Ware and WinZip differ on the encryption standard. That means if you send an encrypted file to someone else who you have given the password to and they use the other zipper, they may not be able to open it.
Most .zip files are not encrypted so the unpacker used should open it. Pk Ware was slow to come out with a good Windows format and that is what shot WinZip to the top. I registered my WinZip years ago and they have allowed me updates ever since. Few software companies are so accommodating.

Yes, WINRAR is a level above zip as far as I can tell. WINRAR archive (packed) is the standard for software programs you get off of Kazaaa and other places. Then when you have it (single file archive) downloaded to your computer WINRAR will "unpack" them same as zip unzips them. Winrar unpacks zip stuff in a more convenient way for me.

"I use winrar." I find it opaque and difficult to manage. It is definitely inferior to Winzip in virtually every regard.
