Pillow Talk (Oklahoman Must Read Editorial on Hillary)

Pillow Talk
2003-06-10
The Oklahoman

WE THINK they're like a bad dream that keeps coming back: Bill, Hillary -- and Monica. Yet book publisher Simon & Schuster thinks there's a market out there for more of the Clintons' tawdriness.

How else to explain that the pre-publication leak from Hillary's memoir, "Living History," deals with the fate-filled morning of Aug. 15, 1998, when Bill finally came clean with his wife on his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky. Obviously, the 534-page book is more than that, and Hillary didn't do Barbara Walters on Sunday night just to be the scorned wife.

But scandal sells, and the $8 million the publisher is paying Hillary has to be recouped. So who can blame them for throwing some chum in the waters to help bait sales of the book?

Hillary supporters will see the book as the former first lady's up-close take on the White House years. She was loyal, she was a victim. She was brainy, she was a player.

Skeptics -- and we include ourselves in that column -- will see the memoir as a political calculation, a pre-emptive strike against the ghosts of Monica-gate that might mess up the plans of the junior senator from New York. If laying yourself bare can help preserve your presidential ambition, why not?

Yet, even before the book's release, there were questions about its accuracy. Another author claims Hillary was told the truth about Lewinsky two days earlier, on Aug. 13. In addition, the New York Times reported Aug. 14 that the president was thinking about admitting the sexual affair.

This is a debate long past its prime, sold-for-profit intimacy that we'd rather not know about.

Good point. You know, we were told for years that it was a private matter. I guess they meant the perjury.

A few media people get it and don't like it, just like the majority of middle America.

I got to take a one time class taught by Jim Lange when I was in elementary school. Seems at the time I had showed some talent in drawing(?) so my teacher recommended me. I barely knew who he was and remember being bored by the class. Wish I could have that back!

Ewwwww, not while I'm eating lunch! What an unfortunate choice of words.
