IN SEARCH OF A LEGACY Poll: Clinton greater than Reagan, Washington Gallup survey also ranks Bill ahead of Jefferson, tied with Bush

Bill Clinton tops Ronald Reagan, George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in a new survey of America's greatest presidents, and ranks evenly with George W. Bush.

Bill Clinton

A Gallup poll released this month asked the question: "Who do you regard as the greatest United States president?"

While Abraham Lincoln and John Kennedy finished first and second with 15 and 13 percent of the votes respectively, Clinton and President Bush tied for third at 11 percent.

Reagan finished fifth with ten percent of responses, followed by Franklin Roosevelt with nine percent and George Washington with seven.

Reagan, George H.W. Bush on Time cover

Harry Truman, Jimmy Carter, Teddy Roosevelt, George H.W. Bush, and Thomas Jefferson all collected less than five percent.

Clinton is especially popular among the MTV generation, with nearly 3 in 10 respondents in the 18- to 29-year-old age group mentioning him. His 29 percent tally of younger Americans is about triple the competition from Lincoln and the current president, both of whom received ten percent support from that group.

Not surprisingly, one's political affiliation had a great impact on selections for this poll. For instance, among Republicans, Clinton received only two percent backing, compared to 23 for George W. Bush, 20 for Lincoln, and 18 for Reagan.

Those identifying themselves as Democrats gave Kennedy 25 percent and Clinton 21 percent, compared to just three percent for Both Reagan and Bush the younger.

Just two years ago when the same question was asked, Reagan was the overall winner of the greatest president question, gathering 18 percent of responses – twice as much as Clinton.

"Has that clinton "legacy" made you feel safer yet?"

Lest Americans ever forget why the clintons, and all their enablers need to be hectored, hounded, and harried into silence, until "clintonese is only spoken in Hell," look here:

The question was posed to a random selection of 5 NEA members, and 5 UAW members for a diverse cross section of Americana!

I think such polls are pretty stupid. I think polls in general are basically dishonest (all depends on how you ask the questions). But this:

among Republicans, Clinton received only two percent backing

Sorry. I cannot imagine a "Republican" saying "Bill Clinton was the greatest president this country ever had." Not even 2 percent.

bogus...If the question had been, "Who is the greatest bungler and most criminal person to have ever held the office of President?" Bill Clintoon would get 99.2%.

My guess is that it was an 800-number poll, and Bill was sitting in front of a phone bank...

This has so many implications its scary. For one thing it shows you how name recognition, good or bad, plays a part in our elections. It also shows what part TV plays and unfortunately it has more control over young people and does a better job of teaching than our schools or if you wish brainwashing. Next it shows our younger people dont know how to do any research on their own or they are not willing nor care to know. It also shows what morality means in this country.
I also wonder how many of our older people dont recognize names of past presidents.
If this is correct we are in big trouble in America and places like Iraq and these terrorist countries could conquer us with a media blitz.

This is sort of frightening to me.

Jimma Carter would disagree.

Any poll that doesn't put George Washington at #1 is as phoney as a three dollar bill and shows the historical ignorance of the 'Mercan people.

Roughly 40% of America votes Dem, 40% Rep, and 20% Ind. If the poll was not formed with 40% of the respondents being Rep to begin with, it was a faulty poll. I doubt if the basis of the poll was anything other than Gallup's usual Dem-heavy base.

Those charged w/educating and informing the American people failed. Case closed.

Small part of the legacy: Clinton threatening the Taliban on the way out the door, the day after the Electoral College elected George W. Bush.

Liberty cannot be preserved
without a general knowledge among thepeople...
The preservation of the means of knowledge among the lowest ranks
is of more importance to the public than all the property
of all the rich men in the country.

There is but one element of government, and that is THE PEOPLE.
From this element spring all governments. "For a nation to be free,
it is only necessary that she wills it." For a nation to be a slave, it is only
necessary that she wills it.

Chances are that the people responding to this poll could only come up with 3 or 4 names off the top of their heads. Of course, if they are 18 to 24 years old, they would only have been politically aware of two presidents, Clinton and Bush...

How does Kennedy even get rated in these polls??? He was only in office for two years. That is NOT enough time to create a legacy or accomplish anything legislatively.

I think some Democrats hit the wrong "party affiliation" button.
