MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (AP) - What began as a quest to beat his dad doing push-ups as a 12-year-old ended 28 years later with a likely world record for Tim Sikes. Sikes broke the record for doing push-ups in an hour with 3,669, well above the current record of 3,416 recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records. The record was set by Canadian Roy Berger in 1998.
Sikes, who said he's been able to do 5,000 push-ups in an hour before, trained three hours a day, six days a week since last July.
"... If you hang in there, you can break through the pain," said Sikes.
Sikes did 75 push-ups at a time and took 15-second breaks to set the record. Several times he had trouble getting off the floor, his arms red from stress and covered in perspiration.
Two counters and two timekeepers officiated. A crowd of more than 40 friends and onlookers cheered Sikes on at a Murfreesboro karate studio on Saturday. His feat was part of a fund-raiser for the Boy Scouts of America and a United Way program.
Officials, members of the business community and witnesses signed a document after the event that will be sent to the Guinness Book of World Records.
Sikes said a push-up competition with his father as a child inspired his dedication to physical fitness.
"I came home from working out with some athletes and was telling my dad how much I could lift," Sikes said. "My father asked me how many push-ups I could do, and then he beat me. I guess that's how it all started."

The article fails to mention that Sykes has no legs.

75 at a time. Yeah, I could do that. I'd rest between heart attacks.

I could do that. I just don't want to. I'm too busy. My phone is ringing. The dog wants out.

one - two - three - four - five. That's enough for today. 28 years is a long time. I'll be back next week, maybe the week after next.

When I was in boot camp, the DIs were always making us drop for pushups until we were totally wore out. It never took that many to wear me out. I used to fantasize (while I was still in boot camp) about having the ability to do thousands of pushups nonstop, thus totally befuddling the DIs. This would have been the man to do that.

When ever I feel like exercising I usually lay down till it passes.
this was once attributed to Ben Franklin,(I think) anyway still appropriate today.

"My father asked me how many push-ups I could do, and then he beat me. I guess that's how it all started." That's funny my dad says "Every so often I get the urge to go run 3 miles. I take a nap until it goes away."

Missed it by that much. (Fingers being held really close together.) ;-)

Mountain Climers were almost the worst for me Sam. My skin still crawles when I remember the DI say, "Just BEGIN ladies....until I get tired"!!

I once did 1000 push-ups. It took me over 3 hours and LOTS of breaks. And I was in MUCH better condition at the time than now. 3,669 in one hour is phenominal.

Damn! I was proud when I did 3 sets of 50 when I was in top shape. That's incredible.

Mountain Climers were almost the worst for me Sam. My skin still crawles when I remember the DI say, "Just BEGIN ladies....until I get tired"!! I remember being called up to the 'classroom' at the front of the squadbay and seeing four-foot long lakes of perspiration on the deck. It always ended up being *something* like that! They'd tell you to 'Begin', and then they'd just seem to forget that you were there, sweating your a** off!
