The Democrats vs. The Law: A Typical Story
The Washington Dispatch | May 17, 2003 | Cathryn Crawford

Posted on 05/17/2003 10:07:52 AM PDT by Cathryn Crawford

Here in Texas, our collective statewide attention has been captivated by a drama playing itself out in the corridors of power in our state capitol of Austin. Due to the actions of 58 Democratic State Representatives, our House of Representatives has been virtually shut down for the entire week. Key pieces of legislation have died just in the last few hours on the floor of the House - pieces of legislation which include a bill requiring parents of minors to be informed before an abortion may be performed on their child, a bill protecting unborn fetuses from criminal intent to harm, and a very important bill concerning children's healthcare and insurance coverage. The Democrats have fled the state to Ardmore, Oklahoma, a small town with a kooky sheriff, just over the Texas-Oklahoma border. Gov. Rick Perry issued warrants for their arrest (which became irrelevant after the lawmaker crossed over into Oklahoma), because the move in and of itself is illegal. By House rules, lawmakers cannot intentionally miss a quorum call. Yet, to listen to them, they seem to think that they are somehow the misunderstood criminals, the true heroes in a land of reversed justice.

."We're here in Ardmore, Oklahoma, because the real problems of Texas are budget problems, are school finance problems, are health care problems that are being cast aside because of a power play by Tom DeLay," said Jim Dunham, chairman of the House Democratic Caucus. Really? You could have fooled me. I though they were in Oklahoma because they are under the mind control of the big bosses who run the Democratic Party.

You see, it's all so convenient. If the redistricting had gone ahead, five U.S. Congressional seats can conceivably be lost by the Democrats in the next election cycle. Oh, the lies are becoming clearer. Suddenly, it's not about, "... budget problems, school finance problems, and health care problems...” Suddenly, we see, it's all about a power play of their own - one that had to have been approved at the highest levels. This has become a national story. All of America is staring at us - on the one hand with slight amusement, and on the other with disbelief that we would actually put up with this sort of crap. The Democratic Party knew what would happen. This is not just about Texas - this is about control at the highest levels of the United States government.

The 51 Democrats still in Ardmore, OK, are due to return today, now that their ploy has worked. At 3 pm, Thursday afternoon, the redistricting bill was effectively killed. Bravo for those brave Democrats, who fled their districts, their capital, and their state to keep the over 400 other bills that had been waiting for two years to be voted on fall away into insignificancy. We should all be amazed at their honor, they say. They did what was right, they say. What honor, what rightness is there in fleeing? Instead of being here, fighting it out, debating until a solution was found, they chose to run away to a Holiday Inn where they could laugh and play and hold poolside press conferences. I guess they felt they needed the vacation - from what, I don't know, as most Texans haven't noticed them doing much lately. They have declared victory. The Democrats think they've won. Barring disgruntled voters at the borders stopping them from reentering Texas, they'll be back at work by Friday afternoon. My only solace is that, perhaps, their actions will be remembered by the voters come next November. Perhaps, then, they'll be permanently out of jobs. We can only hope. Perhaps voters will remember that the same representatives who were playing Frisbee by the pool were getting paid with our money to be doing so. Will we see a refund? Will the Democrats give back the money? That's really a stupid question, isn't it? They have failed us, the voters of Texas, and the rest of the people in America, by using con games and flat out thievery to get their way. Like babies throwing a tantrum, when the going got tough, they held their breath till their faces got red. Last time I checked, we didn't elect babies to run our state government. We elect mature men and women who have respect for the law and what it represents. Or, maybe, it was an idealistic dream. I'm leaning more towards the latter.

Too bad the republicans in California didn't take a hike while the RATS here redistricted themselves into some winning elections. Oh, I forgot, Pubbies have respect for the law, and even if they didn't, they would end up in prison and ridiculed by the media. Only RATS are above the laws.

"Suddenly, we see, it's all about a power play of their own - one that had to have been approved at the highest levels."

Good analysis. It does seem the Demwits (aka Democrat politicians) are totally power-mad. It is becoming more and more apparent, just how corrupt they have become.

Well said!

Let's see, we have this fiasco in TX, the 2000 Election grab by the Dems, the Torricelli-Lautenberg gambit in NJ, some funny business in Tom Daschle's home state during the past election, the unlawful obstruction of Bush's court nominees, the Wellstone Memorial/Rave- and that is just in the last 2 1/2 years! I think the DemocRats will rue the day that they let the Clintonoids take over the party, since this sort of lawless behavior stems directly from Bubba and Hitlery.

And what kinda of payback could they give them? The demos had refuge from a rat Oklahoma governor, this was planned probably from the DNC. Also the Chicken dems also got refuge from a compliant media.

Whatever pork barrel bills that are up for passing before the sessions would end, maybe? Theres got to be something one of those bozos have up for a voted that they were really counting on.

Besides there seems to be quite a few bills that were stopped at the same time that the redistricting plan was hijacked. Why are'nt the Republicans beating them over the head with any of those?

"...frat..."

Yes, they loved their little frat party. Judging from all the sweaty armpits, I'd venture to say they had a good time on my money. Hope they enjoyed it while it lasted. Now that they're back here, though, it won't be so much of a party. I forsee consequences not from the Republicans, but from their constituents. This was not looked on well at all here, not by Democrats or Republican either one. I hope every damn one of them lose the next election. Too much to ask, I know, but I can hope.

There were over 400 bills that were killed because of the behaviour of the Democrats.

I don't know all the machinations, but the point is, IMHO, that this will be pyrahic victory for the Chicken dems. The media is playing them up as "heroes" but not much reporting on the bills that died. Just to show you how clueless the media is, on another thread, a reporter said that some Republicans were supporting the Chicken dems by wearing red, even though there was a thread on FR by the Texas Republican party asking that people show up in the house gallery wearing red to protest the Chicken dems.

I'm just trying to mollify the malcontents who go nuts over what is being reported in the liberal media.

The rule of law matters little to people (from all parties) who simply want to acheive more power no matter what the cost.

Thanks.

OK, I'm probably in the minority here, but here goes. I don't think it's that big a deal. You know, the job of the legislature is to pass laws, raise taxes and spend taxpayer money. Personally I feel we have all the major stuff we need laws for kinda covered. Probably did by 10 years after Texas became a State. Somehow I just can't get my knickers in a knot over a bunch of legislators not legislating, or stopping all work. In fact I think it could be an interesting trend. Maybe the R's should walk out when the D's return. End the session with no action taken.

Somehow my guess is that Texas will survive. Hell, it might even prosper! Sure the Dems are evil idiots, but as Newt famously said "It's not our government anyway". Well up here in Oregon the legislature has given us a $150 billion dollar long term "gap". That's what regular meetings of these guys will do .. but you in debt for the next three generations.
