Minnesota CCW: More guns, more trouble

Last Monday, Minnesota committed itself to more innocent killings when Governor Pawlenty signed the House- and Senate-approved conceal and carry law, which allows any adult without a criminal record or a mental disability to tote a handgun in public places, excluding school properties. More specifically, the new law forbids local governments from banning handguns in places where the state government allows them. After this law takes effect in 30 days, you could be sitting in a park or researching at a public library, not knowing if the person next to you is packing heat. Comforting, isn't it? This conceal and carry law is outrageous. Hasn't anyone heard of the phrase, "violence begets violence?" How is the presence of more handguns going to help the already high rate of handgun-related deaths and injuries? Because of this new law, the number of people legally allowed to conceal and carry handguns could jump from around 12,000 to as many as 90,000 people, according to a legislative estimate. What was Pawlenty thinking? I have walked the streets of Minneapolis at night, and I have never wished that I had a gun in my purse for safety. A can of mace on my key-chain will suffice, thank you. The state legislature is very confident that a simple background check can determine whether or not the applicant will misuse his or her handgun privileges. Violent behavior can start at any time, folks - even after the all-powerful state background check. [Excerpted]

One bleeding-heart type asked me in a recent interview if I did not agree that "violence begets violence." I told him that it is my earnest endeavor to see that it does. I would like very much to ensure - and in some cases I have - that any man who offers violence to his fellow citizen begets a whole lot more in return than he can enjoy.

Of course. That's why the call it concealed carry, you idiot.

A can of mace on my key-chain will suffice, thank you.

But, I thought violence begets violence? Why the mace, then?

Opinions Editor Annie Rzepecki is a sophomore from Edina, Minn. She majors in English.

Looks like Annie did not get her gun nor her education.

Sure hope I can sleep tonight after reading that.

"A girl at Macalester was raped at gunpoint last week."

"What was Pawlenty thinking? I have walked the streets of Minneapolis at night, and I have never wished that I had a gun in my purse for safety. A can of mace on my key-chain will suffice, thank you."

I could connect the dots for you, but seeing as there aren't many liberals running about, I think I have pretty well just made my point.

To tell the absolute truth ... how is that any different than it is today? The only way I know if anyones "packing heat" is if they are carrying it openly, regardless of what the law may be. And, assuming you're a decent citizen, what business is it of mine if you carry a gun anyway?

The way to decrease handgun deaths is to get them off the streets

I'd like to ask this "writer" the same question I ask all people who are anti gun...."If you, or your loved one(s) were being violently attacked and I had my gun...would you want me to intervene?"

Shuts them up immediately & shows their lack of knowledge on this subject.

I just realized that this "English major" doesn't have a clue about sentence structure.

Rzepecki is more sophomoric than sophomore. Its fitting she is an English major. Even back in the 60's English Professors were noted for their leftist bent.

This is just another case of some leftist journalist putting out the same old tired crap, that has been proven wrong before. The leftists claim legally carried concealed firearms will lead to a bloodbath, and that is horse manure.

Past experience has shown that concealed weapons licence holders are if anything much more law-abiding and peacable than the average population.

If anything, the journalist is projecting his own lack of self control and sexual inadequacy on everyone else.

Aside from the fact that I don't know what an "innocent killing" is, we should hold the unpronouncable author of this piece to her prediction. Years down the road, we'll see she is wrong, like all the rest.

“Hasn't anyone heard of the phrase, "violence begets violence?"

I wonder if she’s ever heard of the phrase “show me the beef”?

I keep seeing headlines proclaiming coming dead and destruct in the wake of CCW laws. You would think with all the states that already have CCW laws they could easily come up with some straightforward stats to prove their point. Maybe she can get Mike Moore to help.

More guns, more trouble??

I guess Chicago, D.C., New York, and LA should be crime free zones, considering they have virtual bans on guns.

Her pronoun is missing an antecedent as well as her brain.
