California targets new S&W handgun cartridge

Continuing his vigorous career in authoring oppressive firearms
legislation, thereby restricting law-abiding citizens instead of
criminals, CA State Senator Don Perata is trying to pass SB 601,
which would ban sale/possession of .50 caliber handguns. This bill
is positioned to target the new S&W .500 Magnum cartridge...

Once again firmly under American ownership, Smith & Wesson is
striking back in a big way.  At recent hearing in Sacramento,
Smith & Wesson's legal team addressed the Senate Public Safety
Committee with strong testimony against TWO dangerous bills:

SB 601, which seems to single-out their product and...

SB 489, a Semi-Auto Handgun Bill - would require that all
semiautomatic handguns manufactured after January 2005 that are
imported and sold in California be equipped with a loaded chamber
indicator and a magazine disconnect mechanism.

And on the Assembly side, notoriusly anti-gun Assemblyman Paul Koretz
has introduced AB 50, which would ban the sale/possession of .50 BMG
rifles and the sale/possession of .50 BMG cartridges.  Many thanks to
Ronnie Barrett of Barrett Firearms and Bill Ritchie, owner of EDM
Arms for their strong testimony against AB 50.

How can you effectively fight SB 601, SB 489 and AB 50?

You don't have to be living in CA to be affected by this bill. What starts here spreads east like a virus. There has been thread after thread here in the past 3 weeks about the possibility that Bush would sign an extension of the Federal AW ban. That ban passed after a similar ban passed here. If this bill isn't stopped here, it too could spread. Non-Californians have as much reason to call and lobby our legislators as we Californians have.

Unlucky for you - they have your name and address and when they make it illegal next yaer they will have you turn it in or come get it.

Or ... if you are lucky... they will just add a $5 per round tax.

I don't disagree with your intent to activate folks, get them into this battle in Calif. However, I don't believe the Calif. trend-setting on gun efforts works any longer. The rest of us are on our state legislators hard and often. You've noticed the "35 states now have CCW" right?

Sorry officer, boris sold that gun to me last year, and I sold it to my neighbor's old college buddy last month. I have no idea where he lives, and my neighbor died last week. So sorry!

Firearm manufacturers would be well-served to alter their pricing policies. Pricing for ammunition or arms for law enforcement should increase tenfold for any state which joins any legal action against any firearm manufacturer or in whose jurisdiction, any jury awards recompense in any tort targeting the manufacturer for the misuse by a criminal.

Check your local laws. In PA, for example, it is illegal to transfer ownership of a handgun without registering the transfer of ownership and doing a Brady check on the recipient either via a gun dealer or thru your local police/sheriff's office

Private sales between private individuals are legal in many states. No paperwork is required. If one of the individuals is an FFL, then that person has a legal obligation to do the paperwork. Not every state is as fascist as California.

I'm still waiting for S&W to fill my order for a Performance Center model of the S&W .500 Magnum. I plan to load my own ammo. CH has dies now. They will have brass in a few days. Dillon has the conversion kit recipe and parts for building ammo on a 550 machine. The same bullets that work for 50 AE can be used for the S&W. All that remains to be published is the load information i.e. powder types and weights for specific bullet types and weights.

That's a big 10-4! However, it appears life will continue to become more difficult for gunowners in Calif. until there are dramatic changes in the legislature.
