Let's make Easter a time of civic rebirth for California

The holiday we call Easter, historians agree, has roots in both Christians' heralding of Jesus' resurrection and pagan celebrations of the vernal equinox -- but regardless of its origins, it marks the season of renewal and rebirth.

Trees and plants blossom as snowdrifts melt, many species instinctively produce their offspring, and even the most civilized humans feel subconscious relief that they have survived another winter.

The budget deficit is a direct result of that have-it-both-ways attitude. Gov. Gray Davis and legislators of both parties basked in popularity when they used a one-time windfall of state revenues to increase spending on education, health care and other programs and to slash taxes -- even though they knew that it was fiscally irresponsible.

Ya can;t have it both ways, Dan. A democratic legislature and Governor saddled us with this mess. They need to be aborted before any hope for "civic rebirth" can happen. Trying to blame the Republicans as equal partners in this mess is a low blow, even from you, but not unexpected.

We Californians want high levels of public services and low taxes;

No WE don't, Mr. Walters. You think high taxes and a high level of public services are compatible with a growing advanced economy.

You are an idiot.

That is a very kind invitation, but being down here on the southern Californian Beach, I don't think I can make it!

Happy Easter to you and yours!

The economy is sluggish; the budget crisis may continue for many months -- and become even worse; local governments and school districts have no direction on how to plan their own budgets; and other major, seemingly intractable issues such as the crisis in the workers' compensation system loom large.

The only answer to the problems endured by the taxpayers in the Peoples Republik of Kalifornia is to eradicate the human debris that thrives in the halls of the Kalifornia State Legislature.

Following that, enact voting laws that require people to be off the public dole for a period of no less than 365 calendar days prior to voting in any election.

Likelihood of this happening: 1 in 3,956,056,015

"How else can one explain Assembly Speaker Herb Wesson's brain-dead decision to load his payroll with a half-dozen political featherbedders, mostly ex-members of the Assembly, at a time when the Legislature is contemplating new taxes and deep cuts in spending? California's newspapers jumped on the issue with great gusto, and Wesson, after stoutly defending the practice, finally pulled the plug on the payrollers."
That he even holds office is a prime symptom of the underlying rot.

Thank God for Term Limits, Huh 8-?

Maybe, Turd Limits would be more in order in the manure pits of Sacramento and the legislative morass.

Uh, no Dan. Easter is the Christian celebration of the resurrection of Jesus. That's what it is, Bunky.
