I keep wondering if all this theft was done even before our troops entered Baghdad, so even if they wanted to, they would not have been able to prevent this.

Saddamn probably kept or sold off the best bits over the years. Why anyone was doing archaeology while that regime was in power is beyond me. Those sites would have been better off left undiscovered until after Saddamn was gone. To my mind, anyone doing work over there while Saddamn was running the country was just aiding and abetting.

George said the museum had prepared for the war by moving many items into underground vaults, but many of those vaults had been broken into. It appeared, he said, that the thieves knew their way around the vaults. I think that the good stuff in the vaults was gone before the first US soldier set boot to ground in Iraq. It was either an inside job done during the bombing or the good stuff never made the vaults.
