Upside-down U.S. flag spurs complaints

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. -- Neighbors are asking a central Indiana man to remove an upside-down American flag from his yard because they consider it an insult to veterans.

An inverted American flag can be a sign for distress, but 10 residents have signed a letter asking Orvel Kreb to fly the flag properly or take it down.

Car dealer runs afoul of Fayetteville flag ordinance

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Officials in this military town near Fort Bragg are telling a car dealer to stop flying so many flags from the antennas of his cars and trucks.

Gary Brown shook his head at the letter from Fayetteville's City Council, which arrived this week.

"This is a military town," said Brown, who oversees sales at Powers-Swain Chevrolet on Bragg Boulevard. "If you don't fly (the flag) in this town, I don't know. ... It's just sad. Everybody ought to be flying the darned flag."

A year-old ordinance prohibits city businesses from flying more than five flags at a time.

Brown hung the paperback-sized flags around the time the war in Iraq started. He says he figured in a time of war, city officials would look the other way.

He took the flags down, though, after the city threatened a $100-a-day fine.

City Council spokesman Jason Brady said one flag is sufficient to show support for U.S. troops and that too many flags fluttering along Bragg Boulevard look bad.

"We have this reputation of being a gaudy kind of town," Brady said. "Let's just keep it in taste."

If someone is really in distress, then I have no problem with them flying the flag upside down. But I think it's kind of silly to do it when you're not really in distress and are trying to make some kind of symbolic statement. People don't call 911 and symbolically ask for assistance from "evil government overlords".

I did do exactly that, during the impeachment aquittal fiasco. I had an angry vet show up at my door demanding I turn it back rightside up. I did so; certainly didn't want to insult a vet.

My wife and I visited the Tower of London. She was wearing a small flag pin which, unbeknownst to her, and worked it's way upside down. We approached one of the guards, a Beefeater, to ask a question. Before either of us could speak, he bellowed "Madam, you are in distress!"

After a few moments of confusion, he explained that her pin was upside down, and the meaning of the naval symbol. She tried to straighten the pin, but only managed to turn it ninety degrees.

"Ahhh," he opined, "Now you are being boarded by pirates."

Kreb, 79, started flying the flag when the war in Iraq began last month. He says President Bush did not have the authority to send troops to fight in the Middle East.

I doubt Mr Kreb said that.
I'm willing to bet that he said that President Bush didn't have the authority to wage war on Iraq. Technically, constitutionally he is right. Congress never declared war on Iraq.

Statements by President Bush demonstrating that Bush is anything but anti-UN:

September 12, 2002 at the UN General Assembly:
"The conduct of the Iraqi regime is a threat to the authority of the United Nations..."

"We want the United Nations to be effective, and respectful, and successful."

At Camp David, Semptember 14, 2002:
"The UN will either be able to function as a peacekeeping body, as we head into the 21st century, or it will be irrelevent."

October 31, 2002 in S. Dakota President Bush said:
"I went to the United Nations a while ago because I want the United Nations to be effective."

It will be interesting and discouraging to see the role that the UN is granted by the Bush administration in post-war Iraq.

There is nothing in the Constitution that requires Congress to pass a bill called a Declaration of War. The Constitution sets out the responsibility for the use of our armed forces in hostilities to Congress. How Congress chooses to authorize the use of force is their call.

They did so, and President Bush was constitutionally authorized in this matter.

Bush would like an effective UN, but he doesn't think it is. Nor is he willing to be subject to the International Criminal Court. Nor is he willing to let the UN run Iraq.

His actions speak for themselves.
