PATERSON, N.J. -- An HIV-positive teacher from a Roman Catholic elementary school is accused of sexually assaulting a former student over a two-month period, prosecutors said. Raymond J. Welsh, 33, of Fair Lawn, was charged with sexual assault by a diseased person, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and child endangerment. He was released Friday on $200,000 bail.

Joseph Del Russo, chief assistant prosecutor for Passaic County, said state law requires anyone infected with HIV to notify sexual partners.

Welsh has taught religion, music, computers and gym at St. Therese School in Paterson since the late 1990s.

"Raymond has an excellent reputation in the community for being a decent and good person," Welsh's lawyer, Adolph J. Galluccio, said. Galluccio declined to comment further until after Welsh's initial court appearance, which was scheduled for Monday.

Prosecutors said Welsh's relationship with the boy, now 15, occurred during the summer of 2001. The boy had just graduated from the school, and the illicit acts allegedly took place in Welsh's car, apartment and the restaurant where he worked as a disc jockey.

Do you really think things are worse now than they were at any time, ever, in the past? A few decades ago, the newspaper wouldn't have even reported this, and the teacher wouldn't have been charged with a crime, he would have just been transferred to a new school. Just because people didn't talk about this sort of thing doesn't mean it wasn't happening.

Sadly it's likely the boy is now HIV positive. But I don't see what that has to do with the way the article is written.

I can see this entire thread starting a major flame war.

I don't recall saying that what the adult and child did was okay, or acceptable, or even moral. Of course the adult knew better. As did the child. But the child, I must believe, was deceived by that old pedophile favorite MO - slathering on the attention, compliments, support. Everything that we hear they never got from their parents.

But from the looks of the slightly skewed article, they make it sound like the two of them had "trysts", just by their listing the locations alone. A 13yr old isn't even emotionally capable of having a satisfying sexual encounter with someone their own age, let alone an adult more than twice their age.

The article goes from mentioning the teacher worked at an elementary school to then explaining it all took place AFTER the child left school. Please. That DOESN'T make it okay. The media's "acceptance" of pedophilia is becoming more obvious every day.

And it isn't just the media. Look at pop culture.

I worked with pedophilia crimes for years and actually there is nothing terribly unusual in this case or the way the article was written.... seen it repeatedly.

It seems to have followed the typical course.

1) Pedophile seeks teaching career to be around children.
2) Pedophile uses time around students to pick one for "grooming" (attention, develop close personal relationship, gifts, attempt to turn child against parents, etc...)
3) Child becomes manipulated enough to eventually give in to the constant pressure and allows sex.
4) Child manages to escape relationship afterwards or matures slightly and is then out of the pedophile's preferred age/puberty range.
5) Child is severely ashamed or threatened into keeping the history of abuse quiet from parents and school.
6) Something happens later to make child feel safer about telling the "secret", either has new distance between child and abuser, or other victims come forward, or through psychological care, counseling or medical care, or just matures enough to understand it wasn't his/her fault.

There are actually probably many more that we don't find out about... the minor never reached that "safe" point where they felt comfortable admitting they were abused.
