'She Was Fighting to the Death'
Washington Post ^ | 04/03/03 | Susan Schmidt and Vernon Loeb

Pfc. Jessica Lynch, rescued Tuesday from an Iraqi hospital, fought fiercely and shot several enemy soldiers after Iraqi forces ambushed the Army's 507th Ordnance Maintenance Company, firing her weapon until she ran out of ammunition, U.S. officials said yesterday.

Lynch, a 19-year-old supply clerk, continued firing at the Iraqis even after she sustained multiple gunshot wounds and watched several other soldiers in her unit die around her in fighting March 23, one official said. The ambush took place after a 507th convoy, supporting the advancing 3rd Infantry Division, took a wrong turn near the southern city of Nasiriyah.

"She was fighting to the death," the official said. "She did not want to be taken alive."

Distinguished Service Cross

The Distinguished Service Cross is awarded to a person who, while serving in any capacity with the Army, distinguishes himself or herself by extraordinary heroism not justifying the award of a Medal of Honor; while engaged in an action against an enemy of the Unites States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing/foreign force; or while serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing Armed Force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. The act or acts of heroism must have been so notable and have involved risk of life so extraordinary as to set the individual apart from his or her comrades.

I'm glad she's safe. The Iraqis are lucky she ran out of ammo. An angry woman with a gun is scarier than a MOAB to me.

She is incredible!! Such a brave girl! Did you hear the Governor of West Virginia is giving her a full Scholarship. She said the reason why she joined the army in the first place was fora college education so she can teach elementary school children? Little did she know she was going to become a hero to her country! Her family must be so proud of this girl!! God Bless her!

Jessica Lynch gave as good as she could
Shot them Iraqis as we knew she would
The America stud's green eyes turned red
'Cause he was a-dreamin' of a sweet revenge

We loped on back to her hospital room
We killed her captors and we sealed their doom
We found that girl with the golden hair
And she went ridin' with the Seals who dare

sung to the tune of tennessee stud

Well, I believe the report. I had a tough time considering her a "hero" simply for being captured, and then being rescued.

However, perhaps I jumped to this conclusion too soon. It seems like that little girl put up a very brave fight.

It does absolutely nothing to change my mind, that the role of women in the armed forces ought to be far less than it is, but that's a generality.

In this specific instance, if this report is true, the young woman acquitted herself so as to do her nation proud.

I'm thinking of making her an honorary Texan - she pulled an Alamo on 'em! Not to mention the Team that went in to get her... this whole thing makes me so proud of our forces I could bust.

The anti-war protesters can go to hell; THESE men and women are the REAL American Patriots.

I have a question regarding the photo on the Washington Post site showing Ms. Lynch being carried with a brightly colored American flag apparently draped on her.

I've seen the same photo from other sites and there wasn't a flag there.

I hope not ...something along this line happend to a young man named Ira Hayes many wars ago..
All the troops that fought alongside her are equally as brave imo...those who were killed and those who are still POWs
Given this young womans upbringing I suspect she also feels that way...
I hope folks have enough sense and kindness to leave her alone if that is what she wants
I heard she is a conservative Christian...all she has to do is thank the Lord Jesus - that should drive the media lefties and femanazis from NOW & DACOWITCH away better than garlic

The right thing at the right time.
With the immature/uninformed/uneducated/mainly looking for publicity protestors, and backed by MTV, which is only protesting because their audience is watching the war, instead of mindlessly watching the same VIDEOS over and over, this could get the attention of AMERICA and start a rush of people that are concerned about supporting our TROOPS.
The emotion and sympathy that this woman(SOLDIER) gets will spread to all SOLDIERS.
Eventually, TRUTH will win.
Everything that the protestors and DEMS said about PRESIDENT BUSH and what would happen if we went over to IRAQ has been wrong.
Everything PRESIDENT BUSH said he would do, he has done.

Everything we have been saying needed to be fixed, PRESIDENT BUSH is working on.
ALL the STUPID things that past administrations have allowed to be fostered upon us, PRESIDENT BUSH is working on removing.
You all will see more of this in the future.

I think President Bush may be following more of Queen Noor's plan than I had suspected.
