I have friends who live in the Guandong province, and at least in their area, they don't know anyone or have heard about any local cases of SARS. So, I'm sticking with the theory its only spread by close contact.

I was reading an article this morning that one of the original cases broke out in the city of Foshan population of 3 million. The population of Guandong province is 90 million, so if there were hundreds or more deaths from SARS, I think news would have leaked out of it.

Radio news this morning said, somewhat hysterically, that the virus can be "caught" simply by touching an elevator button which has been touched by a SARS victim. If so, so much for the "close contact" requirement. Looks like some are borderline into hysteria. Hard to know whom to believe.
