The funny thing is that the liberal rock-music audience looks down upon country music.

At the Grammys the big winner was Norah Jones (or whoever she is), someone who plays jazz-sounding pop music.

Jazz is ok. Blues is ok. Reggae is probably ok. Rock is ok.

But country is beneath them.

The only kind of country that the rock-music crowd can tolerate is the "country rock" stuff like the Eagles. The band that does "Hotel California" is as close to country that they'll go. Because, well, it's not really country, it's rock.

It's impossible for a rock-music singer to sing a real country song without him affecting a "dumb hillbilly" type of voice. Seriously, try it. Ask a lead singer in a rock band to sing something like "Your Cheatin' Heart" or whatever he knows. It will come out something like "Yer Chee - tun hort... wull make yew weep." They just can't take it seriously.

Good luck to the Chicks in getting this crowd to accept their down-home type music with their three chords, fiddles, steel guitars, and banjos.

By the way, I saw the Chicks live while they were still working on promoting their first hit. It was one of the most enjoyable shows I've ever been to.

we did too....their original tour....fantastic..

I have been a big Chick fan.....their latest cd is has a lot of blue grass in it...and in many ways, they are more "country" then some stuff going around....the sisters are really talented and Natalie herself has a great singing voice...

which makes it so sad that I won't listen to them again....or buy their stuff....

I don't expect everyone to agree with me, but you just don't go crucifying and embarrassing our President on foreign soil....

too bad they weren't "man" enough to do that here....in front of us....not behind our backs....

I agree--country music is largely looked down upon. (Then there's the whole issue of whether the pop with slightly tweaked instrumentation that one hears on country stations nowadays is really country...) But "Your Cheatin' Heart" is kind of a bad example--Hank Williams's voice had quite a few of those "dumb hillbllly" affectations, not to mention those excruciating swoops ("You'll cuh-ry and cryyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy....") that remind one of the classic Tom Lehrer line "soon we'll be sliding down the razor blade of life."
