"Oh, thus be it ever
when free men shall stand,
between their loved homes, and the war's desolation!
Blest with victr'y and peace
may the heav'n rescued land
praise the pow'r that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must,
for our cause it is just,
And this be our motto,
"In God is our trust"
And the Star Spangled Banner
In Triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free
and the home of the brave!"

You pretty much need a four octave range to sing it really well, but I can tell your heart is in it, and that counts for something, so keep on singing!

We ought to start requesting that this verse be sung whenever events use it.

An octave and a fifth will suffice. A fifth of what, I'm not saying.

I believe you are right! All events....print up the words and hand them out prior to sporting events....it is very powerful. Just what we need today! Glad you all enjoyed the reminder as much as I did!

Thanks for posting this great lyric. Here's my favorite verse from 'America the Beautiful':
O beautiful for heroes proved
In liberating strife,
Who more than self their country loved,
And mercy more than life!
America! America!
May God thy gold refine
Till all success In nobleness,
And ev'ry gain divine!

How about all four verses? I love the second and third as well:
O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hail'd at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight
O'er the ramparts we watch'd were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bomb bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there,
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

I have heard a female singer with a great voice sing a very stirring rendition of all four verses of the National Anthem. It is played every so often on various talk radio shows. Have never figured out who it is. Any ideas?

Thank you for posting this. As I discussed with Prof. John Eastman on RadioFreeRepublic, this fourth stanza of the "Star-Spangled Banner," is the first public statement of our National Motto. Eastman is one of the attorneys filing a brief in the US Supreme Court against the Ninth Circuit's Pledge of Allegiance decision. The National Anthem is officially recognized by Act of Congress. So, if the absurd Ninth Circuit decision managed to stand, the Anthem as well as the Pledge would be unconstitutional. Not a snowball's chance in Hell that the US Supreme Court will go down that road.

Thank you for God Bless America! I was not aware of that verse! It is wonderful!

Well....my song book does not include the third verse which you posted! hmmmm? It shows the third verse as the one I posted...only three verses in all!
Your third verse, is a very interesting one. I hope that we will be singing it in the future,
"And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution."
WOW! Thank you for sharing it.
I posted the little sung last verse, because I think it is important to Praise the 'Power that made and preserved us a nation', and to remember that we are a 'heaven rescued land' and when we put our trust in God, we will indeed triumph and our flag will fly over a free land!

my song book does not include the third verse So much the worse for your song book. :) I became aware that the SSB had more than 1 verse many years ago ... when I saw it printed on a "flag etiquette" pamphlet with all four.

Too few of us actually do that...

No. It is a difficult song to sing, and few sing it well or as it was written. I would love to hear it. I do not know the singer.

I found the complete set of verses here:
http://www.flagday.org/Pages/SSB_words.html.
Some of you might want to mark it as a favorite.
It is interesting that George W. Bush is doing more to bring back the religious basis of our country than any other president. Reagan was truly a giant and had to re-build our country's confidence after Carter the Fool destroyed it. I believe another factor is that Reagan was uncomfortable talking about religion.
I am glad people are now fighting for the right to believe and to share their faith. They used to punish kids for having Bibles in the Arizona school system. Now various groups use lawyers to maintain the right to have Bible and other religious objects. The insanity of the Left knows no boundaries, as we all know.
Our country was founded as a religious country, more than that, as a Christian nation, a city set on a hill. The reality today is that we have many religions and anti-religion. I do not want to see anti-religion winning.
One of my old friends said that the value of a state religion (speaking of England) was that there was a set of values belonging to the nation. Our lurch into anti-religion has made the country safe for abortion and sodomy.
Although I am not a Roman Catholic, I have found many good Catholic books on this subject. One of the best is Richard J. Neuhaus - The Church in the Public Square.

The most stirring rendition of the "Star Spangled Banner" that I have ever heard was performed by Whitney Houston (Believe it or not) before the Super Bowl in 1992. Ken Hamblin (The Black Avenger) plays it before his show sometimes. It never fails to give me goosebumps. Too bad she's freaked out now.
I also HATE to say it, but the next best rendition I have heard was the Ditzy Hicks before the last Super Bowl.
