"....to actively participate in undermining a nation that shed it's blood for you."

We did not "shed our blood for France" in the the same way we are not about to " shed our blood for the people of Iraq"
The French people know this the same way in that the Iraqi people will know this
We will be cheered as "liberators" but they will know that we did it for our own reasons. GW will do what he needs to do for the security of the USA.

Chirac: Saddam, please, sit here beside me.
Hussein: No, Jacques, you come sit beside me.

Has it been made official that France is an Enemy of the United States?

Maybe another D-Day is in the offing, or should be.

If Turkey told US to pound salt, they're sure as heck not going to be pressured by sodden hampsters in FRANCE. It's looking to me like Turkey just wants to get through this with its borders and independence intact. Can't really blame 'em -- we'd probably do the same thing in their shoes.

Agree with other folks here who noted that France is now part of the Axis.

hehe Chirac is screwed. He's backed France into a corner where they will simply have to respond to our invasion of Iraq with something like an embargo. Lovely.

The "Christian Democratic Union" is the CDU, the conservative party in Germany. I wasn't referring to American Democrats.

Many folks around here haven't the knowledge necessary to make any other decision beyond an immediate reaction based on a momentary impression.

I disagree. The goal was to get the Germans out of France to stop Nazi expansion throughout Europe. Liberation, regardelss of the motive, was the goal. Yes, we did it for ourselves only as a matter of preemption ... but the fact is that they were liberated because we wanted the French, not the Nazis, in control of France. Liberation was the goal, the defeat of the German Army was the means. Regardless, I would hope that you and I would certainly agree that the actions of the French in this matter has been outrageous.

The first goal you mention is correct, your second "goal" was simply a byproduct or stepping stone on the way.
If there had been a militarily advantageous method of attacking Germany directly, bypassing the "liberation" of France, we would have certainly gone that route.
Further, I am sure that given the choice, the French people would have prefered we had gone another way. Why have two foreign armies destroying your towns and villages if there is a second solution ?
