Should cities limit pet ownership?
vanity | Linda PraiseTheLord

Our city, like most others, has an ordinance restricting animal ownership or 'haboring' to 3 per household. I think this is an intrusive law. Issues such as health and public nuisance problems should be dealt with by using laws about health and public nuisance. But limiting the number of adult animals is counter-productive. As I have brought stray cats into my home, I have had them spayed and neutered. I now have a dozen cats. My kids brought home 3 kittens. I plan to have them spayed next month. If I give them away, they probably won't get spayed, right? In fact, under our city's rules, I could have 3 female cats having dozens of kittens a year and just pass them out, creating a huge problem.

I think your approach to the problem is correct...spay/neuter.

On another note...I now have a dozen cats.....uhmmm....ahhhh...well...all I can do is pray for you.

What's the likelihood of you getting caught for this 'crime'?

Seems to me that a more productive law would be to have house pets fixed with the exception of breeders.
That would still be intrusive though. (when has that ever stopped a politician?)

So long as they are properly cared for, and restricted to the property of the owner, the city is intruding on property rights, when making laws restricting legal activity on said property.

It is none of their business.

I could see a situation where there are so many animals that it could become a health problem, but usually under those conditions they're not being cared for.

A dozen cats?!

Cats have all the drawbacks of women and none of the benefit.

The only legal activities are those not restricted by law or those following the restrictions.

You know where these laws have their roots don't you?
The morons who have their big, bad dogs tied to chains in the yard. Somebody gets bit and voila no more than three animals per household.
Instead of dealing with a case by case issue, as the law prescribes, they either ban a certain breed or restrict ownership of all animals.
Be careful what you wish for, it may come true.

Two women were out for a Saturday stroll. One had a Doberman pincher and the other had a Chihuahua. As they sauntered down the street, the one with the Doberman said to her friend, "Let's go over to that bar and get something to drink."

The one with the Chihuahua said, "We can't go in there. We've got dogs with us."

The one with the Doberman said, "Just follow my lead." They walked over to the bar and the one with the Doberman put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk in.

The bouncer at the door said, "Sorry, Lady, no pets allowed." The woman with the Doberman said, "You don't understand. This is my Seeing-Eye dog." The bouncer said, "A Doberman pincher?" The woman said, "Yes, they're using them now. They're very good." The bouncer said, "OK, come on in."

The lady with the Chihuahua figured 'what the heck', so she put on a pair of dark glasses and started to walk in.

Once again the bouncer said, "Sorry, lady, no pets allowed." The one with the Chihuahua said, "You don't understand. This is my Seeing-Eye dog." The bouncer said, "A Chihuahua?"

The woman with the Chihuahua said, "A Chihuahua? They gave me a damn Chihuahua?!"

We do the same thing you do. Everything around here is spayed or neutered--including me. We are optimistic that we will eventually find homes for some. We stand a lot better chance of giving away a healthy, well-nourished, vaccinated, sterile animal. There is a side benefit to having them around. Cats kill snakes. There have been several distant neighbors report rattlesnakes in their yards and on their patios. I have lived here over three years, have almost 3 acres, and have yet to see my first snake. The animal control officer told me that if I have a few well-cared-for cats around, they will keep others from showing up. He said they are territorial.

I think cities (or, rather, The People) should limit the quantity of politicians allowed within city limits.

They tend to breed like rats, and should be neutered as well.

Shouldn't that depend on the home in question? I wouldn't mind if the neighbor who has a farm had however many pets. But I would object if I lived in a high rise apt. building and my neighbor, who lived in an efficiency, had 12 cats and 3 dogs.

BTW, I have lived in places where you couldn't have more than 2 people/bedroom. Is that equally offensive?
