Just days before Christmas, Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., wondered aloud in a Vancouver, Wash., high school why the world loved bin Laden but hated America, and what we could do about it.
Sen. Murray was widely ridiculed, but her question was heartfelt and deserves a thoughtful response. Mr. bin Laden has made his demands against America on behalf of the Muslim world quite clear. First and foremost, we must convert to Islam. As a powerful and respected U.S. senator, Ms. Murray could exercise real leadership here, inspiring her followers to do likewise.
First, Sen. Murray should convert to Islam, as Mr. bin Laden demands. Yes, there is a downside, Sen. Murray: the loss of your eternal soul because Islam is a false religion (centuries earlier Jesus said, "I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father unless by me" John 14:6.) But, as a politician, Sen. Murray is adept at trading long-term costs for short-term gains, so this may be manageable.
Mr. bin Laden may well take notice, but he could question the senator's commitment. As a woman embracing Islam, Sen. Murray can provide evidence through her actions. First, she shouldn't leave home without it – her burka, that is. Also, she must limit travel outside the home unless accompanied by a husband or a male relative. He will accompany her to the Senate, tell her how to vote and greatly simplify her life, albeit at the loss of some independence. Mr. bin laden will almost certainly take note. But he may demand further proof. In response, Sen. Murray should check herself into the hospital and undergo the rite of female circumcision practiced in much of the Muslim world. The entire world will by now have heard of the senator's courageous efforts.
Coercive conversion has been an intimate part of Islam's history. When Ms. Murray returns to her duties in the Senate, she should immediately sponsor legislation eradicating Christmas, Easter and other Judeo-Christian holidays. Replace these with Islamic holy days on the federal calendar. The Islamic world will by now sense real commitment, their hatred thawing.
Holidays are, however, largely symbolic. Devout Muslims abhor abortion. Islamic nations consistently oppose U.S.-sponsored U.N. "family planning" efforts that include abortion. Sen. Murray must immediately sponsor legislation here at home criminalizing abortion and mandating punishment by Islamic law for offenders. Such punishment undoubtedly involves rocks – probably not making big ones into little ones, either. Mr. bin Laden is waiting, Sen. Murray. He doesn't want to hate us, and stands ready to build roads and schools in Seattle. They too, will teach Islam.
Next, the senator should seize the initiative to remove women from the educational system and bar them from working – especially in the professions. As a committed Muslim, Washington state's senior senator will certainly sponsor such legislation. Next, property rights will have to be revisited. Women must be barred from owning property because under Islam they become the property of their husbands and families. Finally, a key element of Sen. Murray's support base – homosexuals – may be disappointed. The Taliban, which practiced the brand of Islam nearest to Mr. bin Laden's heart, punished homosexuals for perversion by pushing them off the roofs of tall buildings. The Capitol is perhaps unsuitable for this, especially during tourist season, so Sen. Murray should canvas her remaining supporters and find a suitably tall structure that presents minimal danger to passersby.
The author hopes these modest suggestions will help Sen. Murray in her quest for gaining greater international acceptance of U.S. policies and demonstrating to the State Department how appeasement should be conducted. Had British Prime Minister Chamberlain had this type of leadership as Hitler came to power, World War II would almost certainly have been prevented. Yes, peace flows from appeasement. The Jews would be gone, so there would be no Mideast Arab-Israeli conflict. The world would be united under a single, benevolent dictator with a funny mustache.
Stand up for your convictions, Sen. Murray. Know that the hordes of Seattle peaceniks who elected Baghdad Jim McDermott stand in multicultural unity behind your courageous actions against the Great Satan of American imperialism in our world. True, religion and politics are inseparable under Islam, but since Islam does not hold Jesus in high regard, the ACLU will undoubtedly grant a truce.
Even your political enemies will respect your dedication to your new faith – especially those who are stoned to death on the Capitol steps for remaining Christian, Jewish or worshipping secularism on Sundays at the shopping mall. All this from "a mom in tennis shoes."
