Ray Hickman of Joseph proved himself to be the strongest man in the world in his weight class last weekend in Reno, Nev.

“I’m still in shock,” admitted Hickman, 31, an electrician by trade, who bench pressed 429.9 pounds on his way to a world championship in the 165-lb. division at the Thermalink World Bench Press and Deadlift Championships. Wow, 165 lbs and he's benching 430. Amazing. I weigh around 310 and I can barely bench my own weight, maxed at 315 last night.

I used to do 400 when I weighed 235 pounds. Militaried 300, but not ten repetitions. However, those days are over now that I am a senior citizen. I had to buy clothes at a tent and awning store.

Wow! I always wanted to bench 405, but never did. Last time I max'ed, nearly a year ago, I got up 385, but failed on 405.

I just turned 40, so I don't max very often. But since the clock is ticking, I realize that I better give up that dream or hurry up and do it.

I don't max often either. I maintain mostly. When I was in college, I worked up to 370 one winter, but I couldn't break that plateau. I'm 6'6, so I blame it on long arms.

Since I bodybuild, I rarely go heavy. I stay within the 8-12 rep range. I messed up my shoulder last year trying to max.

But the weight really doesn't matter. A bodybuilder's goal is only to LOOK like he is the strongest man in the gym. lol

I like Big Macs too much to body-build. I don't have near enough discipline. When I was a chubby 14 year old farm boy, my first cousin placed highly in national body-building, and he wanted to train me. I got into the lifting, and got rid of the chub, but never to the point where I could be one of you guys.

A 3x bodyweight squat is damn good, a 3x bodyweight bench is crazy.

Impressive, but the Squat is the king of lifts. All the rest are just warmups ;-)

You pay a price for it. The largest shirts many places carried were size 16 1/2 xxl I couldn't possibly button them around the neck. Wearing a necktie liiked like my toung was hanging out. I walked into a ready to wear store. An old tailor took one look at me and said, "Forget it. I can't fit you. You have AT LEAST a 50 inch chest. There's nothing here for you." It was about 54. 28 1/2 inch legs for 750 pound squats. My doctor said having me for a patient was like having an elephant for a patient. He had a handgrip machine in his office I pulled 285 pounds on.

Today, I'm ausgespielt.

If you are correct in proportion, the distance as measured from fingertip to fingertip across your chest should equal or come close to your height. Thus, I am long-legged AND long-armed because I am proportional.
