Help needed for my Navy son

My son is in the Navy at Bukley AFB, Aurora, CO. A week ago he was in a car wreck off base. He hit a Yellow cab that ran a red light. The cab driver was cited and there were witnesses. The cab company is now denying the driver was to blame.

Does anyone know a good lawyer in the Denver area. I am in WV and have not been to your fair state since 1971 (FT. Carson) Any advice will be appreciated.

I do know that Colorado is a "no fault" state. I don't know what this might mean for you, but some friends of mine had a terrible time working through the aftermath of an accident there a few years ago. Procuring a top notch attorney is probably wise. I hope everything turns out okay for you and your son.

You could call an attorney I know, Jim Jablonski, at the Gorsuch firm in Denver(sorry do not have the number here). He doesn't do this kind of work but he knows lots of people and is a very good person himself (even though he is a lawyer).

If you son hurt his neck (nagging pain) their insurance
company will settle really fast !

That's what I was thinking, too. The place to start is Base Legal. Maybe he can't use their services because the accident occurred off-base and isn't considered an official military matter.

He talked to Base law officer and he is trying to help. I am just trying to cover all bases.

Have your son watch TV until he sees a commercial whose first sentence is, "Have you been hurt in an accident?"

Although (if I recall correctly) they deal mostly with property rights, I THINK
they are a fairly conservative group of legal minds.

I guess my angle is that they might be friends/associates with lawyers that
are more "military-friendly" and able to help your son.

I see they're located in Lakewood, CO. I'm hazy on this, but I think that
might be a Denver suburb.

Other thought? Can your son contact something like an ombudsman or liason-type
person from the Navy's own JAG corps? Maybe they can help out by at least
steering your son in the right direction with a referral, even to a good
civilian attorney.

You may be thinking of the Mountain States Legal Foundation but I don't believe they handle this type of case. The DO take major cases in the entire region. They started with funding from Peter Coors and they have grown from that.

There should be a legal officer on the base that can help/make recommendations to him.

The state bar association should be able to make free referrals. The first meeting with the attorney is generally a nominal fee ($15 to 25).

If it was not his fault the insurance company should have some useful advice.

The cab company is banking on the fact that your son is in the service. Frequent travel, reassigned, transfered, in combat, training and so on...

His availability, minimal assets, military demands will make him a no show at depositions, hearings, legal proceedings. His lawyer will be charging him a gazillion dollars acting on his behalf if he will represent him at all.

You are cofirming my recollection.
I was just thinking that since they are in the Denver metro area, they might occassionally
have a beer (Coors?) with some other lawyers that might be more willing to help out
a Navy fellow.

I have a few lawyer friends from Okalhoma/Texas; even there quite a few law grads are
pretty left-of-center and anti-military...
I just thought someone at Mountain States Legal might help out with a connection.
