Sources on Capitol Hill say that Incoming Majority Leader Trent Lott of Mississippi has collected assurances from more than 20 Republican Senators that they will support him in a new election to determine whether Lott will remain as Senate Majority Leader.

'We have got well over 20 and are approaching 26,' says one Lott supporter.

Twenty Six votes ( out of 51 total GOP members) are required for Lott to keep his job.

Talk is cheap. Many Senators will 'informally' provide assurances now, just in case Lott squeeks through.

On Jan 6th in a secret vote, I doubt they will remember what they said 'informally'.

Could they call off a vote if Lott can produce the tally by conference call?

Indeed. An article in our daily bugle said to expect Senators to continue to PUBLICLY support Notta Lott right up until the exact instant when they vote AGAINST him.

If Lott stays, we can all say bye, bye to the newly won GOP Congressional majority come 2004 and maybe the Presidency cause the GOP will be potrayed as a "racist" party with a "racist" leader. What a pity. After the great GOP electoral victory of 2002, we are now looking at paralysis of the conservative agenda in the Senate with a very ineffectual leadership indeed.

But then again Lott may be maxing out at over 20 votes and less than 26.

That may be all of his support right there.

If 26 Pubbies support Lott, then they will have confirmed that they view the Senate as a private club and not as public service. If Lott is supported by the Republican Senate, then I will not be able to support the Republican Senate, and each Republican Senator will richly deserve the electoral pastings they will receive, starting in 2004.

No it is not good. The Repubs have just screwed themselves royally if they vote for him to stay as leader. If they think that by voting to leaving him as leader will sweep this under the rug they are in for a rude awakening at election time in 2004. The Dems are going to play the race card BIG TIME in 2004 with Lott as their ACE!!!

Nickels and Lott have almost the same voting record. Wouldn't matter who would win really.

You know, I give Al Gore credit for making this who racist comment thing look silly. Here he is, one of the most well-known Democrats out there, making fun of Trent Lott and the comments on Saturday Night Live. It just basically proves that this isn't at all about racism (as I've said from the get go). This is about politics. Plain and simple.

The Dems want to hang someone for their November embarrassment, and want to do the Ken Starr treatment on Lott. Now it looks like Republicans are rallying behind Lott- as they should have from the get go. Sure, they could call his comments stupid and wrong, but accept his apology, then unite to tackle and defeat the wrongful racist stereotype of Republicans by Democrats.

Since praise for the days of "sit-ins" is so very strong now...I wonder if Democrats might lessen their opposition to "sit-ins" at abortion clinics.

Since the appearance on BET, we now know that Lott is not our man. He has demonstrated that he can't take the heat and has sold out to the affirmative-action industry.

Maybe we should shuttle all the potential candidates for the post to BET and let them run the gauntlet, too.

It's a simple question: "Are you or are you not a Republican-in-name-only?"

I still don't think the party is united over this.

My guess is 70-30 against Lott among the rank and file.

Lott knows that the committee chairs do not want to lose their chairmanships again this time to the Dims and is twisting their arms..

I've got a good idea. Let's abolish the Senate. Name me a good Senator, just one. Drunks, lily-livered cowards, hound dogs, fakes, phonies.
