My guess is the heavy bulky washer was the stand in for a nuke in a test run. It's easy for a stowaway to slip off a ship in port, harder for him to deliver a washer to an address in NYC or DC to prove the delivery route's reliability.

I have no doubt that Saddam sees himself rising from 100 meters below Bagdad's dusty ashes among the throngs of 1 billion devout jihadis, via al Jizz-era tv, clammering for "Death to America! No really, this time we mean it."

Iraqi oil in the ground is safe money in his bank. Saddam's military judgement is very poor, but his cannon fodder breeders seem furtile. Saddam billboards and statues must stimulate as lotus blossoms. Maybe Iraqi minarets are seen as Saddam phallic symbols, in that unusually secular nation.

We must be braced for their well practiced mass murders here and Anglo-American communities abroad, especially the most obvious mortal threat to Islam, teenagers and children. Saddam was ill-prepared for a second front during the Mother of Battles. This time, Qaeda/Iran's mullah mafia/Paliban death cult are on his team, and they are here. At least our Left Coasties will be safer, rightfully disarmed by the 9th's Blackrobes.

I think it really was right the way I had it: there was no test on the U-235 gun design (Little Boy, dropped on Hiroshima), but the plutonium-based implosion design (Fat Man, dropped on Nagasaki) was tested, at Alamogordo, before actual use in war.

I'm reminded of the refrigerators in an article from the March 25, 2000, issue of The New Yorker containing the following [the boldface is my emphasis]:

It's hard to put a figure on % certainty. It just seems completely unreasonable that multiple cruise ships would have outbreaks of the same virus over a short period of time...unless there is a common means of infection. Norwalk is spread by poor sanitation e.g. people not washing their hands after using the restroom. Smallpox is spread by face to face contact, contact with contaminated bedding and contaminated dishes/silverware. The use of a food service to "inoculate" the vessel is dirt simple. People are a lot more trusting of silverware than restroom doors.

I agree. The hardest part for Saddam may be to get his own nuclear engineers to do their jobs. The engineers and physicists assume that nuclear weapons use by Saddam would result in they and their family being obliterated in nuclear retaliation. So they are scared to death to actually succeed in producing bombs. On the other hand, they are also scared to death to be found out for foot-dragging and then tortured. As a result, truth is in very short supply but underestimating Saddam's capabilities or resolve is a terrible mistake.
