I recently went back to my home state (NY) for a visit.
Everywhere, there were signs of decay: factories dead or dying, office space for rent, etc. The only businesses that seemed to flourish were adult care homes and undertakers.
I visited the supermarket where I bagged groceries as a kid. I had to park in the next time zone because their were about 50 handicapped parking spaces (all empty) near the front.
The only billboards I saw were for HMOs, presciption drugs, and funeral homes. I asked about new jobs coming to the area: by relatives told me no, because of taxes, taxes, taxes, and then taxes.
Look, I live in Europe--where socialism is a way of life. But my home state looks like a crumbling Soviet state.
They did it to themselves.

The Republicans are intoxicated with last week's election results as the article stated. I do not expect Republicans to do well in New York and Kalifornia, but this nation is a republic not a democracy. They had better sober up in a hurry if they cannot mount a campaign and unseat Democrats like Baucus in Montana and Johnson in South Dakota. They need to maximize the ideological advantage that they have in states like these even if they write off for the most part states like NY and Kalifornia. For the Democrats to hold both Senate seats in states like Louisiana and South Dakota is unacceptable.

it's NEW YORK!, for heaven's sake. Who do you want the Republican nominee for governor to be? Jesse Helms?Hmmm. Don't rush me, I'm thinking!
He will lose by 80 points.
Would an honest opposition and a real alternative be worse than backdoor socialism? Besides, didn't people used to talk the same way about the pre-Reagan, national GOP?

HELP! California has been taken over by liberals. Forty of our 58 counties voted for GOP Bill Simon for governor but counties such as Los Angeles & San Francisco voted for "Gay" Davis, the governor from hell! We're drowning in liberalism.Sounds familiar -- Blue vs. Red?

"What did they win?"Not McCall, Cuomo, or Clinton?! or Sharpton, or whoever...
What would your preferred alternative have been, realistically speaking?!
(you have my sympathy, but one must be pragmatic, and I'll always take the "lesser of two evils, with continued attempts at education" scenario over the "crash and burn, and hope true conservatives rise from the ashes" one...the second scenario is not only overly subjective, but also potentially dangerous in assuming a decent Phoenix could rise...)
Had Republicans thought that way, Reagan would never have won the nomination.
