BLATANT RE-POST -- Democratic operatives planned, engineered Wellstone political rally
Capital Hill Blue ^ | 10-31-02 | By DOUG THOMPSON

Posted on 11/01/2002 10:44:43 AM PST by Oldeconomybuyer

Political operatives at the Democratic National Committee in Washington developed the plan to turn the memorial service for Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone into a political rally, top party sources tell Capitol Hill Blue.

The party also urged the Wellstone family to ask Vice President Dick Cheney to not attend the service and concocted the excuse that security for the VP would disrupt the event even though Secret Service security was required for former president Bill Clinton, who was invited and who did attend.

Rick Kahn, the Wellstone campaign worker and friend, worked the highly partisan crowd into a frenzy with strong rhetoric urging them to get out and elect replacement candidate Walter Mondale.

"That was the plan all along and it was one of the reasons we didn't want Cheney at the event," says one Democratic political operative who spoke only under promise that his name not be used. "It was a high stakes gamble but this is a campaign that demands high risks."

The secret plan was developled at the DNC headquarters in Washington and approved by party chairman Terry McAuliffe, the source said.

Kahn was then briefed and urged to turn the memorial event into a political rally. Wellstone campaign manager Jeff Blodgett's apology Wednesday afternoon was also part of the plan, designed to provide party deniability, the sources said.

"There were two agendas at work," one source said. "We needed to draw attention to the election. Between the sniper and Iraq, the election has been lost in the news. And then we needed to energize the Democratic base and Wellstone supporters in Minnesota."

While Kahn's firey rhetoric, and walkouts by Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura and GOP Senate Leader Trent Lott, fueled controversy, Democratic political operatives in Washington congratulated each other Wednesday.

"Mission accomplished" was the message of the day at the DNC and Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee offices.

Sources within both committees also said the Wellstone event is only the beginning of plans for media-generating activities through the election next week.

"This is war," one operative said. "The Republicans are too busy planning war on Iraq. They won't even see us coming."

The DNC and DSCC did not return phone calls seeking comment on this report.

Other than the Rush Limbaugh show and FR, this story is an insider the beltway secret.

America needs to know this story and the media is AWOL. Pathetic!

Ok, if you can blatantly re-post; so can I. It's on the same topic; but due to massive other posts really didn't get a chance.

So, here you go:

CANABILISTIC VULTURES; THE PAUL WELLSTONE STORY MARK A SITY 10/29/02

It seems the new motto for the DNC is; "No corpse too fresh, no corpse too old, no corpse too closely related. If it with strengthen us we will feast." Even profiting
from their own dead isn't beneath them, as the Sen. Wellstone story attests. Before the flames were even out at the crash site, the left was searching for a candidate
that had a chance of stepping into the race and winning. I cannot fault them for that, given that Election Day is so close. Unlike the NJ scam, this was (as far as
anyone credible can determine) a legitimate accident (even though liberals seem to have a bad track record with flight). They did need a candidate and had to find
one.

However, after they seemed to select a candidate; they have refused to make it official, at least to date. I can understand suspending the campaigning until after the
funeral; however this silence about who the official candidate will be leaves the Republican opponent in a bind. He can no longer campaign against Sen. Wellstone; to
do so would really be in bad taste since the man, his wife, and his daughter suddenly died. Besides, Mr. Wellstone is no longer in the race he is a Senate candidate
with a mystery opponent. While Mr. Coleman, the Republican is trying to figure out how to proceed with his campaign that he put on hold out of respect, the Dems
know who they are running against. Mr. Coleman does not. He suspects he will be running against Walter Mondale, but doesn't know for certain. He cannot prepare
an ad against his opponent a week before the election, because he doesn't know who his opponent will be. The Dems however, are not operating under this same
disadvantage and can even use the same ads that Sen. Wellstone was using! It is quite possible that Mondale was suggested just as a distraction, while the real
candidate is being prepared and groomed. Perhaps the real candidate, Mondale or not, will not be announced until the day before the election. This would really
hinder Mr. Coleman! For all we know, the real candidate could be none other than Bill Clinton! Wouldn't that make for a nice November Surprise?

Meanwhile, while the Dems are plotting and scheming on how to best use this fresh corpse, Republicans are barred from even bringing up the voting record of the
implied candidate! When Newt tried to do so, just to bring up the facts on Mr. Mondale on a weekend TV show, the obnoxious one, James Carville, stared
screaming (ok, that's the only way he "communicates"; I really feel sorry for his wife!) that it was a vicious personal attack; implying that he was attacking a man who
just died (ok, hard to tell with him, but…). So, now it is an attack on the dead to list the implied replacement's voting record? I suppose it will also be construed as
an attack on Sen. Wellstone for Mr. Coleman to state his positions.

Until Monday, the vultures were just tasting the corpse; it seems it tasted good. On Monday they began to feast in earnest. All Senators were welcome at the funeral,
all except the President of the Senate; VP Chaney. Mark my words, this is a set up! Within 6 months, after people have forgotten that Mr. Chaney was "asked" to
stay away "by the family", both Bush and Chaney will be called heartless, cold, and partisan for "snubbing the family" of Sen. Wellstone in their days of crisis. They
will be criticized for sending only a junior cabinet member. Had the tables been reversed 4 yrs ago, the family of a dead Republican Senator would have been torn to
shreds by the press for being selfish and partisan. Of course, had that been the case, it wouldn't have been Gore going, it would have been Clinton himself; anything
for a photo op!

In addition, Mr. Coleman will be forced to refrain from mentioning Sen. Wellstone, yet the "sympathy card" will be played up by the Dems. Sen. Wellstone would
have wanted…. Sen. Wellstone would have never stooped to that level…. Sen. Wellstone would have never said (fill in the blank).

Since the libs control the press (or most of it), they will get their message out. If Republicans try to respond; we'll be called mean spirited, hateful, etc. Let's not forget
the Carnahan race in MO, not this one, the last one. AG Ashcroft was running against Mr. Carnahan, who also died suddenly. Ashcroft suspended his campaign, and
virtually gave the race to Mr. Carnahan's widow. What else could he do? Gee, let's portray this woman who just lost her husband as a dim-wit? Oh yah, that will
play! Never mind that she is a dim wit! It just wouldn't fly! The Dems had a huge sympathy card there. I'm surprised they didn't run one of the sons in MN; or -
maybe that's their real "November Surprise"?

"This is war," one operative said. "The Republicans are too busy planning war on Iraq. They won't even see us coming."

They never do. I wonder if the Dems didn't overreach this time. This may have had the effect of enraging Republicans and shaming traditional Democrats, if there are any left and should that be possible.

The DEMOCRATS Engineered a 7 POINT DROP in the Polls for MONDALE. They are creating their own MELTDOWN. Coleman is Dead EVEN, according to RUSH and I believe it was a Battle Ground Poll. THATS GREAT NEWS

Rush said it was a Republican internal poll, not a Battleground poll, so take it what its worth. However, its clear that Mondale will take a hit from that orgy at a funeral that occurred the other night and Mondale may continue his history of losing elections.

If Mondale's polls slip too mucn, I would advise him against letting the DNC charter a plane for campaign stops.
