The mobile telephone division at Norwegian telecom firm Telenor plans to cut 216 jobs by early next year. The pending layoffs at Telenor Mobil mean a total staff cut of nearly 15 percent.
"There's no way around it," Telenor Mobil chief Ingvild Myhre told employees at a company-wide meeting Tuesday morning. "Costs have to be in line with income."
The vast majority of those facing layoff, 179 of 216, work at Telenor's sprawling new headquarters at Fornebu, west of Oslo. The remainder work at Telenor Mobil's other 15 offices outside Oslo.
All of those targeted by the cutbacks will receive offers to voluntarily quit this week. They must respond by January 6. If they refuse to accept the offer, they'll likely be laid off.
Around 1,600 people now work for Telenor Mobil. Myhre said it was "painful" to have to resort to cutbacks "in a company with so many highly qualified people who have contributed to Telenor Mobil's success."
She said the company already had made major cuts in "all other expenses." She said the strong growth of earlier years "is over," while revenues from text message and other services also have flattened out.
The layoffs within Telenor Mobil come in addition to cutbacks elsewhere within the Telenor system that have hit 1,250 other people. They either have lost their jobs, been offered severance packages or been transferred to other divisions.
Another 300 jobs are due to be cut in Telenor within the next year.
Regards, Ivan
