LOS ANGELES, California (AP) -- Archaeologists have uncovered the remains of a Viking longhouse that many believe was the home of Snorri Thorfinnsson, thought to be the first European born in the New World.

The 1,000-year-old ruins were found in a glacial valley in northern Iceland during a survey of Viking-era buildings led by archaeologists at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Blam, you post some really good stuff.

Put me on your ping list, please.

You see, at one time, I really wanted to be an archeologist.

In fact, to work a dig is on my list of things to do before I go to Valhalla!

Way back when in College, one of my favorite courses was "Cultural Anthropology" (I was business major). I lucked out with this elective course in that the Prof had acually lived amongst some Columbian tribe that was still practicing the "old ways".

During my high school days, I had devoured everything Greek, Roman, Aztec, Mayan, Toltec....etc.

This Prof made the course so interesting; moreso, in that he actually knew what he was teaching!

My limited "free" reading time is devoted to appartently the same subjects as you!

Keep it coming!

BTW, have you ever had the chance to visit the LaBrea tar pits in LA?

I did with my Petroleum Engineer father-in-law. Absolutely fascinating! Great museum and you can see, even today, the methane bubbling up out of the earth!

Weird -- but oddly facinating.

My son loved it.

No, and I was just out there visiting my son. (dangit, didn't think of it. He just got back from Machu Pichu) Most of my archaeological travels have been in the Yucatan, although I have been all over the world in my youth.

Machu Pichu? That's on my list too!

My brother-in-law is married to a Columbian born gal, who is now an American Citizen and just yesterday got accepted to the American College of Surgeons!

Anyhow, they just bought a vacation house in Santa Maria, Columbia and invited us down.

I'm going to propose an "civilized exhibition" to Machu Pichu as part of our visit next year? year after?
