You might think the anti-meat food police at the Center for Science in the Public Interest would be cheering the new meat substitute Quorn.

Instead, CSPI is scaring the public and bad-mouthing Quorn to the Food and Drug Administration.

Quorn is "the processed cellular mass that is obtained from the filamentous fungus Fusarium venenatum strain PTA-2684," according to the manufacturer's application to the FDA. The fungus by-product was approved in the U.K. in 1985 and is the top-selling meat substitute in Europe.

This Quorn stuff sounds like what they put in Arbys sandwiches. Once upon a time, Arbys had REAL Roast Beef (RB) in their sandwiches and they were TERRIFIC. Then one day one of their cost accountants got the "bright" idea of adding some sort of meat substitute in the sandwiches as a cost saver. The result is some sort of chemical compound that looks a bit like roast beef but doesn't taste like it at all.

That Quorn stuff is - bar none - the worst thing I've ever tried to eat in my entire life. It was disgusting.

Zippy the Pinhead loves eating food covered with Polysorbate 80. And his favorite desert is yogurt covered with taco sauce.

I would put much trust in anything from any of the Nader outfits, but they might have a point here.

I salute your attempt, but there's no &*%#ing way anyone is ever going to get me to eat this.

Ever.

I think you're right.

The last couple sandwiches I had there were kinda... spongy ?

That's not as bad as the other two problems that made stop going there:

1) Rookie meat slicers who cut the meat(?) too thick.

2) The dreaded chunk of gristle. If it's in one slice of meat(?) on your sandwich, it's usually in a bunch of them.

Spoken like a true Iowa Farmboy. Iowa's farmers (and their Mothers) thank you for this testimonial.

I'll try anything CSPI hates. It's hard to imagine a higher recommendation.

I'm with you. If somebody has trouble with the thought of eating real meat - DON'T EAT IT. If you try this stupid stuff, you deserve what you get.

Arybs "roast beef" is real beef, but it's been pulverized and glued back together. This in the name of having a "consistent" product. I'm pretty sure the ingredients are all "natural", but you're right. It doesn't taste or feel like roast beef.

Are you sure? It sure tastes like there is some soy or chemical additives in it. And what's this hangup with "consistency?" What good is "consitency" it if it tastes like crap? I would prefer the old "inconsistent" but great tasting Arbys.

p.s. I have a funny but true Arbys story involving a Hindu for whom eating beef is taboo. Perhaps I'll post it later.
