Sarandon Boycotts Rocky Horror
SciFi Wire ^ | August 6, 2002

Posted on 08/07/2002 10:31:43 AM PDT by Paul Atreides

Susan Sarandon, one of the original stars of the cult 1975 SF movie The Rocky Horror Picture Show, told SCI FI Wire that she wants nothing to do with a proposed remake—not even a cameo. "I'm boycotting the Rocky Horror Picture Show organization," she said in an interview. "They should have shared some of the wealth from Rocky Horror. For me, it's the principle of the thing. There are other people involved with that movie who need some money, and they should spread it out a little bit. It's been a golden egg for the longest time, and it's the least they could do."

The last straw for Sarandon was when the producers asked her to participate in the DVD special edition. "I'll let you in on a secret," she said. "When they did the DVD, and they asked me to do the voice-over [commentary], I said, 'How about giving people some money? You could throw a little money our way.' And they wouldn't, and I didn't, so they took an interview from VH1 that I had done for their anniversary show. I've done a lot of press for The Rocky Horror Picture Show, because I love the movie and I love the people, but they took that and put it on the DVD [instead]."

The Fox network will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Rocky Horror with The Rocky Horror Birthday Show, a two-hour movie to be produced by Fox TV Studios, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Birthday will air in February 2003, 30 years after Richard O'Brien first penned Rocky Horror as a play that ran in London, the trade paper reported.

whenever they say it's the principle of the thing - it's for the money.

In my opinion, Rocky Horror was dumb. Still, Sarandon manages to be dumber. Were the actors not paid according to their contracts? Did the cameramen get stiffed?

I relate movie makers to those who invest in new businesses. There's no guarantee of success, and if they have a hit, then they deserve to reap the rewards.

Never understood the popularity of that film. Most boring and dull 2 hrs I ever wasted.

I'm no fan of Susan Sarandon. But I do believe performers should share in the successes (and failures) of their works. It's her image on the screen. She should be paid for it.

I know what you mean. For years, I had heard of what a wonderful film it was. When I finally saw it on tv (I was NOT going to be seen renting it!), all I could think was "Is this what the big fuss is about?".

No Susan, The least they could do was spelled out in the contract you signed, What you want are residuals on that hoary movie.

It's been a golden egg for the longest time, and it's the least they could do...

And while I'm bashing Sarandon, didn't Rocky Horror launch her career? I mean, giving a few minutes of her time as a thank you to those investors that gave an unpromising young actress a leg-up on a career filled with undeserved success (if you count talent as a measure of deservedness)...well that seems the least she could do.

Well, she got paid to do the original film. She didn't sign a contract to get any sort of extra royalties off of it, did she? I mean, she got paid for her work.

if its in the contract she signed! If not it was her poor negotiation skills, lack of foresight or plain stupidity.

Susan may have turned off the average movie-going public with her outspoken liberal obnoxiousness and liberal movie/cause of the year. She may be hard up for cash. After all, she will be starring, in a supporting role, in the upcoming Dune sequel, for SciFi Channel.
