I don't know what Bill Cosby's political views are. And I don't think it was his intent to put any political messages into the show. However, watching numerous episodes recently on Nick At Night, I have noticed numerous things that, by today's standards, are politically incorrect.
The show has a very, very strong support for the institution of marriage. This can be observed in many of the episodes. Most notably, watch the episode where Cliff's parents celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Look at how his parents stare into each other's eyes. This episode is very powerful. And there are plenty of other episodes that portrary marriage in a positive light, too.
In one episode, Vanessa was assigned a science project for her school's science fair. She had plenty of time to do it. But she waited until the last minute. She was so full of self esteem, and so sure that she would get first place. But when she got to the fair, she realized that all of the other kids had put a tremendoous amount of work into their projects. It was obvious to everyone at the fair that Vanessa didn't put any real effort into her project. She was very embarassed. She did not win first prize. She did not even come close.
When Vanessa got home, she made up all sorts of excuses to try to justify her failure. She claimed victimhood status. So Cliff told her the politically incorrect truth: "You're trying to blame everyone except the one person who is actually at fault. Stop feeling sorry for yourself. What happened was your own fault. You should have started sooner. You should have worked harder. It's time that you accepted responsibility for your bad decision making." Those weren't his exact words, but that was the general message.
In another episode, Theo asked his father to buy him a lot of expensive things that he didn't really need. So Cliff had Theo take an imaginary job with an imaginary salary, and plan an imaginary budget. All of a sudden, Theo realized that he didn't need to have as many possessions as he had previsouly thought. This type of fiscal restraint is the exact opposite of today's politically correct entitelement mentality.
Cliff's character was born around 1934 or so. And he is a medical doctor. And he is black. This means that he got his college degree before affirmative action ever existed. This is a very politically incorrect idea.
Pregnancy is always portrayed in a positive light. Babies in the womb are cherished. Large families are encouraged. Cliff and his wife have 5 children. There are no worries about so-called "overpopulation." Abortion is never mentioned on the show, as far as I have seen.
In one episode, Cliff said, "My great grandfather drained a swamp, and built a 12 room house." That one sentence contains multiple politically incorrect things. Note that he used the word "swamp," not "wetland." And note that it was drained. And note the implication of private property rights. And note the implication of self sufficiency. So that's four instances of political incorrectness in one sentence.
In one episode, Cliff suggested to his wife that they take a trip to France. They would ride in a limosine, with a truck following behind. They would go to where the shops were. He would give her his credit card. She would buy a bunch of things, and put them into the truck. When his credit card was maxed out, he would give her more credit cards. Then the truck would drive onto an airplane, and they would fly away. This support for greedy materialism is very politically incorrect.
I have saved what may be the best example for last. In one episode, Cliff won the "doctor of the year" award. His acceptance speech contained the following sentence: "I am an American."
"My great grandfather drained a swamp, and built a 12 room house."
Now we get show after show teaching us that all marriages are inherently bad with the exception of homosexual "marriages." Every show teaches children that all pregnancies should end in abortion.
Now that's politically incorrect.
