Indeed......I am a Reformed Presbyterian....a "Covenanter." Many Covenanters were forced into slavery in Scotland.

Perhaps it is splitting hairs, but many historians do not believe that the Hessians who fought for the Brits against the Patriots were mercenaries. Here's the difference: a mercenary is a soldier who sells himself and fights for his paymaster. Hessians were paid by the German prince who was paid by the Brits.

For the most part, the Hessian soldiers were German farm boys drafted by the prince and thus served (there were about 30,000 Germans who fought for the Brits during the RevWar; 22k Hessians and about 8k Bruswickers; about 10k stayed in this country after thr RevWar).

Chinese and other nationalities are smuggled into the US under the same circumstances today

I once did business with a Russian who told me about the practice of "selling a Jew". Apparently there was a pretty good business arrangement going on in Russia (early '80s) where if you could grease the skids to get a Jew smuggled out of Russia, you could get his apartment and basically everything of value he had to leave behind. The main thing was getting his apartment.

Often the German "princes" made their subjects serve in the army. The princes got payment for their "human property" and the young men got shipped to the new owner's battlefront.

Involuntary servitude is pretty much the same thing as slavery. Some people might consider the serious danger to the young soldiers worse than slavery.
