ANN COULTER'S LIBERAL HECKLER AT CORNELL SPILLED THE STORY OF WHITE SLAVERY IN AMERICA

Ann Coulter's heckler (here, here, here, and here) may have been a kook, but he was right about one thing: many whites came to this country as slaves. With copious help from sources, I will recount a famous episode of Scots enslavement by the British.

On September 3, 1650, the British, under Oliver Cromwell, defeated the Scots, under David Leslie, at the Battle of Dunbar. (See 1892 Gardiner's Atlas - Battle of Dunbar September 3rd 1650 for a nice picture of the British and Scots positions.) The British took some 10,000 Scots prisoners, several of whom were, on September 6, sold into slavery. My own ancestor, George Darling, was enslaved at Dunbar, and came to be in the possession of a Mr. John Bex and the other owners of the Lynn Ironworks in Lynn, Massachusetts (now known as Saugus, Massachusetts).

A Colonel Banks wrote an article in the October, 1927, Proceedings of the Massachusetts Historical Society titled Scotch Prisoners Deported to New England by Cromwell, 1651-52. This article includes a graphic description by an eyewitness of the Scottish defeat at the battle of Dunbar. It also quotes a communication to Parliament about the appalling conditions of the Scottish prisoners. According to Col. Banks:

``Comment on this letter seems superfluous, except to note the death of sixteen hundred men, taken prisoners in a fanatical religious war, within a period of fifty-eight days, nearly thirty a day. These were men picked by Cromwell as sound and able to travel. . . It is a revolting picture of savage cruelty, . .'' [p. 11] Here are a few pages that tell stories of Scots who were captured at Dunbar and sent, as slaves, to the new world:

People came here as indentured servants who were for practical purposes slaves for a defined period.

Not just Cromwell. Charles II also deported thousands of Scots as slaves to Barbadoes, the Carolinas and the other plantations during "the killing times."

Such slaves, where captured then transported following battle, generally were not treated as indentured servants. They were made slaves for life.

Read Chapter 3 of The Redneck Manifesto by Jim Goad for some well documented information about the very large number of white slaves brought to the new world. It's personal for me. The first "American" ancestor in my mom's side of the family was a German who was kidnapped by British and brought to the colonies to fight as a Hessian soldier. Say, do you think I can get in on the reparations gravy train?

Indeed.

Etymology: Middle English sclave, from Old French or Medieval Latin; Old French esclave, from Medieval Latin sclavus, from Sclavus Slavic; from the frequent enslavement of Slavs in central Europe Date: 14th century

Just forget about it. Anything the whites have suffered has been dismissed by the left.

One of the most misunderstood facts concerning the colonies. There were literally tens of thousands of English, Scottish, German, French and Dutch people forced into coming to America in the 1600 and 1700 period. There were indentured slaves. Some were allowed to bring their family but most were not. Few ever found a way to return to their homeland. Not one word is being said by the black population about these people. All were uprooted and taken by force to the new world. The French took over 10,000 to the Orleans area around 1700 in an attempt to produce a 'wal-mart' style plantation sector. It was an absolute failure because most of these Frenchmen simply refused to work in the heat and perform heavy labor. Eventually, this led to the black slaves being imported in from Africa. Why won't Jessie speak of these poor indentured servents? They were taken from their land, just as much as the blacks. Surely Jessie can read and understand history.

I plan to keep this thread bumped because when enough people see this thread there will be no excuss that blacks don't know that whites were slaves too. This is not a game. The American people will not have the jesse jackson shake down over some wet dream he cooked up while cheating on his wife with that bimbo.

It is possible to tentatively reconstruct the sequence of events during the first few years of John Sinclair's presence on the American continent. The ship John and Sara docked at Boston Harbor on February 24, 1652. The surviving prisoners disembarked and were marched from Boston to Lynn, a two day trip. There, at a place called the "Saugus House" or the "Scotchmen's House", they were apparently sold into indentured servitude to the highest bidder. As noted above, our ancestor John Sinclair and several of his comrades were purchased by the Scottish expatriot Nicholas Lissen, a Presbyterian lowlander who had emigrated to America, via Northern Ireland, in 1637 (Bean 1977:5). Transporting his new laborers north to present day New Hampshire, he employed them in one of his two lumber mills in Exeter. There John Sinclair worked his way to freedom. It is not known how long he remained indentured, but he was a free man by January of 1659, when he purchased ten acres of land in Exeter. This transaction is recorded in a deed filed among the Old Norfolk County Records, at Salem, Massachusetts (Morrison 1896:65).

I come from a long line of Hessians on my fathers side, they were a German mercenary unit commanded by Germans (which is a reason the family is spread all over the globe). I don't think your family history is complete. The Hessians were hired by the British in the revolutionary war, when the limeys lost many recognized a good thing and stayed. They were mercenarys not slaves though. Armed slaves generally don't work well (their are exceptions in history).

If anyone had doubt about the existence of white slaves, the picture "EMANCIPATED SLAVES, WHITE AND COLORED" in an 1864 edition of Harper's Weekly would have been proof (Frontispiece). The article in Harper's was entitled "White and Colored Slaves." All of these slaves were set free by General Benjamin F. Butler in New Orleans and were attending a school for emancipated slaves when this picture was taken. The article went on to name and describe each individual. The descriptions of the white slaves were as follows: "Rebecca Huger is eleven years old.... To all appearance she is perfectly white. Her complexion, hair, and features show not the slightest trace of ***** blood....Rosina Downs is not quite seven years old. She is a fair child, with blonde complexion and silky hair.... She has one sister as white as herself.... Charles Taylor is eight years old. His complexion is very fair, his hair light and silky....this white boy...has been twice sold as a slave.... These three children, to all appearance of unmixed white race, came to Philadelphia last December." Harper's Weekly was very popular, having a circulation of around 200,000 before the Civil War.

Travelers who spoke of white slaves in the South, advertisements for white runaway slaves, newspaper articles about white slaves, and light and white heroes and heroines in "tragic mulatto" fiction all served to validate that there were white people who were enslaved in the South. Disbelievers were shown, in the words of the newspaper article cited earlier, that "Slavery has no 'prejudice against color.'
