Politician says Japanese nukes could counter China

TOKYO (Reuters) - The leader of Japan's opposition Liberal Party, Ichiro Ozawa, said on Saturday it would be a simple matter for Japan to produce nuclear weapons and surpass the military might of China if its neighbour got "too inflated".

Inviting a sharp response from Beijing, which is sensitive to any signs of militarism in Japan, Ozawa told a seminar in the southern city of Fukuoka that "China is applying itself to expansion of military power".

"If (China) gets too inflated, Japanese people will get hysterical," Kyodo news agency quoted him as saying.

"It would be so easy for us to produce nuclear warheads. We have plutonium at nuclear power plants in Japan, enough to make several thousand such warheads," he said.

Ozawa said his statements, coming just days before Japanese Prime Minster Junichiro Koizumi visits China, were meant to encourage stronger ties between China and Japan, the only country to have suffered a nuclear attack.

He said he made similar comments recently to a person he described as being affiliated with the Chinese intelligence agency.

"I told that person that if we get serious, we will never be beaten in terms of military power," he said.

Ozawa said Japan found itself in a difficult position.

"Northeastern Asia, in which both China and North Korea (news - web sites) are located, is the most unstable region in the world," he said.

"China is applying itself to expansion of military power in the hope of becoming a superpower...following the United States."

Koizumi will visit China for three days from April 11 to attend an economic conference on Hainan island, although he is also expected to meet Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji.

Li Peng, chairman of China's parliament, who is on a visit to Japan, said in an interview published in a regional newspaper on Saturday he was optimistic about Japan-China relations.

Li said Japan and China, long resentful over its treatment at the hands of Japanese invaders, may encounter difficulties on the path to closer ties because the countries were so different.

"Even in such cases, the two nations can solve any problems with effort and foresight," Li said in an interview with the Kitanippon Press, a newspaper in western Japan.

Li's visit is one of several high-level exchanges between China and Japan to mark the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties in September 1972.

Ties have been strained in recent times by Koizumi's visit last year to a shrine honouring Japan's war dead, including convicted war criminals, and Japan's approval of a history textbook that China and other Asian countries say downplays Japan's wartime aggression.

I've long thought that we should allow Japan to re arm, just to provide a counterbalance to China.

This is one of the most helpful things I have read in a long time. We need help in defending against the growing military of China. Japan could be that help. They should of course develop their defenses and should do it rapidly. Of course, I know there are WWII memories and fears. And, of course, the Chinese would try to "woo" the Japanese to form an Asian TIGER that the world could not oppose. But, hopefully, the Japanese see the danger that Communist China poses. As long as China is ruled by Communist butcher thugs, Japan is not safe! And America is not safe! And the world is not safe! Come on, Japan - the world needs your defenses against the Chinese - NOW - not later.

Given its occupation of China in past, it seems Japan has never had a problem with being outnumbered or outgunned. Determined fighters, they.

The communists need a reality check big time.

This should help.

Bush saying Republic of Taiwan should help.

But the communists will not learn and they keep statements such as these from the general populace by press control.

Their newspapers are full of overt lies about groups like Falun Gong.

It is a big mess there.

China is behind the arabic/muslim terroristas... I feel it in my bones. I think the USA KNOWS it. I think our allies KNOW it too. This is why the Eurocowards are pissing themselves over the palestinians. They KNOW it too. It is a flashpoint for a long overdue, worldwide housecleaning.

The euros have made themselves vulnerable through complacency, and practiced immorality... euthanasia, abortion and sexual perversion on a scale unheard of in previous generations.

We have our problems here too. But hopefully the salt here can preserve the meat. UK is going to survive... but france, germany and spain...

Japan is thinking the right way. We will help them do what is necessary to contain, bookend and checkmate the chinese.

Producing Nuclear weapons takes alot of money. Japan is in a decade long recession with no end in sight. Japan's economy could not survive the high taxes required to finance a nuclear weapon program.

The Japanese would never go for it, unless they thought we would no longer provide their defense.

Well - we need to encourage them to go ahead and work to improve their defenses - because we have our own economic problems. Perhaps there are some in our government not yet sold out to the communist Chinese who can get that point across. We need all the friends against the Communist Chinese government that we can get!

Your statement also applies to Americans. The USA is very vulnerable to another terrorist attack, while Bush keeps pushing for amnesty for illegal aliens. The USA is in deep *_*_ with this kind of leadership.

"I told that person that if we get serious, we will never be beaten in terms of military power," he said.

This is absolutely true. One of the major reasons Japan took the lead over America in designing appliances and electronic goods is beacause while their most brilliant engineers were making Walkmans, ours were building Stealth bombers.

If the Sony guys get sucked into Japanese defense technology programs, the Chinese will find themselves in a walking nightmare. They will never out-savvy the Japanese when it comes to high-tech. Japan beat the Russians just over a century ago with only a few decades to invent an industrial society from the ground up.

I'm fairly sure Japan already has nuclear weapons, and am certain they could have them online in less than 12 months if they don't.

Acctually the CIA world fact book says, 127 million to 1.273 billion. Or the Japanese are out numbered 10 to 1.

Sure China out numbers Japan, but look at living standards and wages and technology and I'd put Japan over China anyday.

Hell, China knows it as well and thats why they are beefing up their military because Japan is the only country that can/will stand up to them in the Asia region
