I am using an Acer computer that we purchased in 1995. It has Windows 3.1 and Netscape 4.0. We have decided to buy a new one (DUH!!!) but what I have found online almost always uses the Windows XP operating system. I have not heard good things about Windows XP.
I would appreciate advice (please, not too technical) about Windows XP vs. Windows 2000. Also comments re Dell, Gateway, etc. would be helpful.
Please remember you are dealing with a shade-tree mechanic (I learned on DOS and BASIC and was first online with the DOS-based Compuserve newswire in 1995). I appreciate any help.

The usual history of Microsoft is that eventually they stop supporting older systems. Also I expect a service pack will soon fix any minor problems with Windows XP.
So I would be inclined to go with Windows XP. I'm using Windows 2000 on a couple of notebooks now, but I intend to get XP with my next computer.
Also, everyone has their preferences, but I would consider looking at a Dell computer. I think you get good value for the money, and in general they have a better than average service record. You can price various systems at their web site, and buy on-line if you choose.

Most of the big boys will allow you to specify the OS (Operating System - as long as its from Micro$oft)!
If you use things like Word, Excel, Outlook you MUST get the XP versions - skip MS Works. If you're planning on using older programs you's likely want to ask for Windows ME (Millenium Edition). Its better than Win 98 but easier for geek-free homes to work with.
Also consider checking some local PC shops with a Dell spec sheet in hand they can probably beat the Dell price including local support.
I highly recommend Dell computers. Their customer service is excellent. I had a part break at 11 PM on a Friday night, we finished a vain attempt to fix over the phone around 12:30 AM on Saturday. The new DVD drive came Monday morning. The tech had me bring my drive out to my dorm lounge, where he sank the new drive in.
Talk about convenience!!!
Don't get fooled into purchasing Windows 97. I did, and am pretty sure that all I got was this bootleg knockoff.
Although I have to admit....it is energy efficient.
I have a friend who just bought a Dell laptop and had a problem with the wireless modem. Dell tech support came to his house and spent hours and hours until it was fixed.
I will buy my next computer from them for sure.
I now work with techies and they all hate Microsoft (a pre requisite to being a techie I believe) big on Linux but I have not heard any attacks against Windows XP in fact they actually like it (begrudgingly of course). I have just today bought a computer with Windows XP home installed so until I get it I cannot comment - but the fact remains that if you don't like it you can always install any operating system you like.
The choice is yours - hopes this helps.
ME is probably the worst abomination of an operating system EVER.
Or unless you have a multiprocessor computer.
