Just wanted to wish everyone here a Happy Anti-Solstice!
As you may know, today is the day that would be the darkest, dreariest, most miserable day of the year if it weren't for Man's capacity for rational thought. Because of this, we've been freed from the tyranny of the elements and have been remaking the world to fit our needs.
Before humans used our rational abilities to invent civilization & technology, our winters were a life & death struggle to survive - when we weren't trying to mimic bears & hibernate. Today we go out into the cold winter day mostly for recreation!
To celebrate Man's triumph over nature, at our house this is the evening we drive around to see the winter lights. Some years we also make our big holiday dinner on this day. Or we'll pop some microwave popcorn, kick back, & watch a tape of "Young Tom Edison", or "Tucker: The Man And His Dream" & revel in worship of crass hegemonic Western materialism, in our warm, cozy modern natural gas-heated house.
Now, some of you already know that I'm one of those godless atheistic Objectivists, and you're probably rolling your eyes in disgust. But stop & think, even many of you Christians should want to celebrate the Anti-Solstice: It takes some of the materialistic, rationalistic pressure off of Christmas, leaving Christmas free to celebrate the birth of the Son of God as a purely religious, spiritual holiday.

Because of this, we've been freed from the tyranny of the elements and have been remaking the world to fit our needs. While I haven't quite succeeded in remaking the world to fit my needs - this whole gravity thing is really inconvenient sometimes, and cats are a whole chapter by themselves. I will join your celebration however, if for no other reason than tomorrow the days start getting longer!

We hav'nt triumphed over natureThat's true. We've beaten it to a truce & live in mostly peaceful coexistence. That's all we really needed to thrive & multiply prodigiously.

I suppose this is more an "Announcement" than "News", but at least I posted it under "Your Opinions".

You can't triumph over Nature. You can't even live without Nature. Nature will kill you and recycle you. It's been going on for billions of years.

I life a cup of calorie-laden, cholesterol-ripe egg nog in salute of " crass hegemonic Western materialism" as I plop in a $1,000 leather recliner, hit the switch to light my thoroughly useless but atmospheric gas log fireplace, and watch Fox News reporting on shivering, starving maggots in Third World hells around the world. Without capitalism, I'd be fighting them for a larvae entree.

Tomorrow, I always say to folks, Gee, is it just me or does this day seem longer than yesterday?, or somethin' like that.
