Mariners Set All-Time Win Record (Shameless Vanity)
CBS TV | 10/06/01 | Me

Posted on 10/06/2001 8:36:19 PM PDT by Scott from the Left Coast

The Seattle Mariners just shut out the Texas Rangers 1-0 to reach 116 wins, tying the record for the most wins ever in a baseball season -- 116. The record they tied was set by Frank Chance's 1906 Chicago Cubs. We're pretty damn happy up here in the NW.

I know it means nothing compared to all that is happening in the world and in America these days, but, you know, it's a pretty good diversion for us suffering Mariner's fans over the years. Congrats Mariners! Tomorrow we set the all-time record on the final day of the season.

Oh. By the way, the final out was a strikeout of Alex Rodriguez. The first time all year the Texas Rangers were shutout. It's so sweet.

BTTT It's a bright light in the unfolding events. Not getting as much coverage due to other serious issues, but I agree - we're pretty darn proud about the Mariners!

Hey, at least I didn't put it in "Breaking News". Gimme a break -- we're baseball crazy up here.

Regular season wins mean nothing. If you can't win in the playoffs, what good is 117 or 162 wins? Talk after you've won the World Series, because, unless they do that, the season is a total and complete failure.

I am a big Mariners fan, but this record definately has to have an * next to it. The 1906 Chicago Cubs were 116-36 in a 154 game season. The Mariners are 116-45 now with 1 game left. Nothing to sneeze at, but after 154 games, the Mariners did not equal the '06 Cubbies.

Well, now, my friend, consider the difference in eras. Everything was quite a bit different in 1906, competition wise, than it is in the early 21st century. I don't wish to diss Mr. Chance and his Cubbies, but it is much more difficult today to win at this level. In the modern era, the Mariners of 2001 must rank with the Chicago Bulls as the most dominant team in major sports over the course of an entire season.

And as Guillermo says, the final proof will be if they can win the Series. If they do, we may be looking at the greatest team of all time.

Damn it. I am hoping against hope that the road to the World Series will not have to go through Seattle for us.

Being a Cleveland fan however, we are used to losing. Winning would set this town into a frenzy.

Better you than New York my friend.

They don't mean "nothing", just ask the S.F. Giants today how much regular season wins means. But I get your point. And you all will hear from me again when the M's finish the deal early in November. I promise you that!

Cleveland has been a great team for a number of years now. And they should have won it all a couple of times. But...Sorry...this one isn't going to be your year. I sure hope you will root for us after the first round though. Don't want to offend any "karma" out there!

Congrats to Mariners! But don't forget the Atlanta Braves who just won their tenth(10) consecutive division title. No team in professional sports has done this (nine was previous record by Celtics and Lakers).

I have the privilege of saying, the remarkable success of the Mariners proves once again that anyone who doesnt live in Seattle is immutably indifferent to what takes place there

Yes, but there were fewer teams on the Cubs' schedule that season too. And there was no free agency, so one could also argue that it would have been easier to build a superior team when there were fewer teams competing for talent in a system that prevented players from changing teams as they wished. Plus, any record that has stood for 90-plus years is worth celebrating when tied.

My hat's off to the M's, but they'd better hope that the Yankees take care of the A's the first round or else they will be watching the World Series on TV this year.

Someone should also issue a "misleading title alert". The M's TIED the record, they didn't SET a new one.

Maybe we will meet in the Series. Congrats as well to the Braves. Hopefully, if we can survive ARod, Clemens, Giambi, Gonzalez et. al. we can survive Chipper Jones!

If the LA Dodgers were winning 116 games it would be big old news. Tis true. I still remember touring the Kingdome back when I was 7 when it was built. Back in the good old days when everybody was ignoring Jim Zorn and the Seahawks and Alvin Davis and the M's. For good reason too ;)
