Boston airport scrambles with new procedures

September 12, 2001 Posted: 2:18 PM EDT (1818 GMT)

BOSTON, Massachusetts (Reuters) -- Boston's Logan Airport on Wednesday scrambled to comply with new U.S. Federal Aviation Administration security measures, towing cars and sweeping terminals for bombs as they tried to account for missing security badges.

The new measures still allow up to 5 percent of the security badges issued to airport, airlines and cargo personnel that permit them to go unquestioned through check points, to be missing before a new round of background checks must be done, MassPort officials, operators of Logan Airport, said.

MassPort Security Chief Joseph Lawless said that for several months the airport has been in the process of "upgrading our security system" and issuing new badges. The upgrade began months before two Boeing 767s were hijacked from Boston and crashed into New York City's World Trade Center, Lawless said.

There are 16,000 workers at Logan and 12,000 have badges that allow them free access to planes and tarmacs. Under previous and new regulations, up to 600 of those badges can be missing before an airport operator has to do fresh background checks on all personnel.

Meanwhile, Logan is trying to tow some 9,000 cars from its parking garages that were left behind in Tuesday's chaos. The garages and the shuttered terminals will then be swept by teams of explosive sniffing dogs before the airport is permitted to reopen, MassPort's Director of Aviation Thomas Kinton said.

The security measures to be applied to all U.S. airports will include the elimination of curbside check-in, restricting access to secure areas, increasing both uniform and plain clothes police details, and stepping up the number of random identification checks, Kinton said.

"I cannot tell you when we will reopen...They will take a lot of time and we're going to take our time to get it done and get it done right," Kinton said.

The new measures will also ban the sale or use of knives -- metal or plastic -- at most areas within the airport. This includes concession stands or retail shops, Kinton said.

Airlines will not be accepting cargo or mail and aircraft must be searched before each flight is boarded, he said.

Kinton defended Logan's security arrangements.

"Or are you saying that you think the FBI will cover anything up that they find?"

The very first statement issued by the FBI on Tuesday morning was that "we had no advance warning". Sounded to me like they were in a rush to answer a question that hadn't been asked yet.

I still think we need to know all of the players in Burns Security. I'm suspecting Intel. connections, active and retired.

Have you considered the idea that TWA800, OKC, 1st WTC bombing, and Egyptian Air crash may have all been trial runs to garner information about how we would respond? I think all of the disasters/terrorist activities of the last decade need to be re-evaluated.

Be patient with the blonde here. What would be their motivation, and whose orders would they be acting on?

Money. Power.

The CIA's specialty is destabilizing governments in order to place puppets in control. You do realize that, don't you?

Say you were a major investor in Burns (and several other security companies), wanted to increase Security Provider business in the World. A little more instability/insecurity in this wealthy country gives you More Money. A little bit of dangling of carrots in front of aspiring agents, 'specially FBI wannabe CIA agents, and wink wink nod nod, an Event is set up to occur. A useful idiot like bin Laden is a natural means to the end. Just let him operate, he's capable. And all you have to do is just "miss" a few key pieces of info at the key times.

You might want to do some serious background reading on how The Company operates. It'll provide the details from history.

Candidly, I do not believe the total collapse of both towers was anticipated. It would have served their purposes more completely if they stood as a long term reminder of how vulnerable we are.

Before you take anything stronger than Glenfiditch, there are several possibilities, incompetance among them. Most likely in this case I believe the problem is over extension and disagreement on what the role of the FBI should be. It seems to me the intrusion of federal police into what should be local affairs (not this case) ,expansion into overseas activities (CIA territory), and the expanded roles of other agencies such as the ATF has creates confusion among the ranks. Although this kind of situation does often enable tose whose intentions aren,t so pure.

If you don't have FoxNews on now, you need to turn it on. Carl Cameron and Rita Cosby are doing an excellent job of reporting the Cayman Islands anonymous letter, the CIA's message to the FBI about the terrorists, and other things. The cat is out of the bag on this one; I just don't see how they'll be able to pull a significant cover-up on this one. Judging from the CIA's public statement that they notified the FBI several days before the WTC attack, maybe someone is making sure a massive cover-up doesn't ensue.

As for the FBI's inability to catch these guys, my own opinion is that it's not so much due to some type of complicitness as it is to understaffing, underfunding, and all the others things that TooBusy listed above. I know for a fact that they are severely understaffed in their efforts to catch the internet pedophiles who prey on kids. And of course, you could probably throw a good dose of Incompetence in there also.

I missed the FOX bit (I have a 2 year old to chase around while my wife woks) so I will try to catch it later.

I also don't believe a cover up can go on forever among professionals and (call me an optomist) there must be some professional investigators in the gov't somewhere.

I pray to God (and I mean that literally) that we are not that corrupt as a nation. But I am not going to rule it out either.

We need to start DEMANDING answers for how this and all of the other shenanigans of recent history have been allowed to happen.
