Mag 4.1 Earthquake Shakes Knoxville TN Area
USGS ^ | 10 May 2025 | Robert A Cook PE

Posted on 05/10/2025 10:03:45 AM PDT by Robert A Cook PE

A Mag 4.1 earthquake just a few miles south of Knoxville TN at 9:00 EDT 10 May 2025 shook the geological region around between Knoxville and Atlanta GA this morning.

No nationally reported reports of damage or injuries, but a low magnitude earthquake less than 5.0 seldom causes much damage. Hillside rock falls and tree falls in the already wet soil after several days of rain are likely the closer to the epicenter one goes.

Unlike California's very broken earth and rocks, where small magnitude earthquakes are not felt very distance from the epicenter, the very large, very rigid Eastern US geology tends to let the energy (movement) from even a small earthquake be felt much further away than CA residents would report.

The USGS map is a search report from the USGS database for all earthquakes in that region of the Appalachian foothills from 1985 through today.

More than 3500. Almost all in the long stretch of Chattanooga's Lookout Mountain and its adjacent Tennessee River Valley to its west.

Did you feel it?

A friend says his sister in Marietta did. My son is up an hour NNE of there for the weekend, and says he did.

In Greenback. I’m hoping my quilt shop there had no damage.

I’m in Athens TN just 34 miles from Greenback, the epicenter. Even a 4.1 is strong if you are right on top of it. LOL

“New Madrid fault?”

That’s on the other (Western) end of Tennessee.

No, not directly related to the early 1800’s New Madrid earthquakes. They are much further west.

The orange dot on this map is today’s 4.1 Magnitude earthquake south of Knoxville. (May 1985 through May 2025 earthquakes are marked by each dot.)

https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/?extent=33.15595,-90.91736&extent=37.20408,-84.74304&range=search&search=%7B%22name%22:%22Search%20Results%22,%22params%22:%7B%22starttime%22:%221985-05-10%2000:00:00%22,%22endtime%22:%222025-05-11%2000:00:00%22,%22maxlatitude%22:37.379,%22minlatitude%22:33.541,%22maxlongitude%22:-80.541,%22minlongitude%22:-86.331,%22minmagnitude%22:0.5,%22maxmagnitude%22:6,%22orderby%22:%22time%22%7D%7D

The New Madrid earthquakes since 1985 are the next group to the west.

In terms of geology…this is on the doorstep of New Madrid.

When that sucker starts rocking and rolling, things will get interesting real fast.

I’ve heard an earthquake on the New Madrid fault, sometime in the 19th century, changed the course of the Mississippi River.

That area was sparsely populated then. Nowadays, you could see some severe damage in major cities such as Memphis and St. Louis.

It was the largest recorded earthquake. On record. It caused the church bells in Boston to ring.

It caused the Mississippi to run backwards (albeit for a short time.)

Most folks don’t pay attention to this stuff. I am sure the building standards in that area DO incorporate safeguards. But yeah…St Louis, Memphis, and everywhere in between would be impacted.

It’s an every 200 years type of event. And the last ones were in 1811-1812.

So…we are about due. It would be a case of everyone looking at So Cal for the “big one” and being very surprised it was in middle America.

And worse, for some political reason, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission “Eastern Region Emergency Response Equipment Center” - with all the emergency response generators and pumps and welding machines and controllers for the East half of the country - is inside Memphis TN, only a few feet above the Mississippi River floodplain. Safely inside the ring of Highway and Interstate bridges that surround downtown Memphis TN itself.

I would think a quilt shop would be the safest place to be in an earthquake.
